The product of extensive testing and feedback from the vertical world, the Osprey Mutant 38 backpack provides a simple, strong, lightweight solution for short alpine adventures or multi-day mountain trips. Minimalist without being minimal in carry or function, the pack allows you to focus on what's beyond and above, not what's on your back. The Mutant 38 includes a 3-point haul system that's ideal for wall hauling. The Mutant 38 is equipped with a thermoformed EVA back panel that maintains ventilation and minimizes moisture absorption while you hike, along with a lightweight, removable framesheet that helps stabilize the pack when loaded. As a result, you'll feel as refreshed on the sixth mile as you did on the first. The pack is also designed to tote a ton of mountaineering gear, with ice axe loops for attaching either technical or nontechnical ice tools, Hypalon racking loops that provide a proven, nonintrusive racking/organization system for climbing equipment, and a removable spindrift collar that not only provides extra protection from the elements but also retains a climbing rope in its strap. Perhaps the handiest feature, however, is the removable three-fold bivy pad that's located in the pack. The bivy pad--which fits inside an internal pack sleeve--is ideal as a sleeping pad for super-light alpine use or as a simple sitting mat. The removable 3-point bivy pad works as a sleeping pad or sitting mat. The pack, which offers a default volume of 38 liters (2,300 cubic inches), expands to 48 liters with the floating lid attached, but you can also remove the lid to shed weight on long hikes. Finally, the pack includes Osprey's Z-Compression system, a rapid, easy, removable load-compression and adjustment mechanism. The Z-Compression system makes it easy to install sleeping mats, poles, and skis on your pack, and then stow the excess webbing in the Mutant's wand pockets. Other details include Gorilla Grip patches that protect your pack's exterior from your ice pick blades; a Reverse Wrap ErgoPull hip belt that secures out of the way when you're wearing a climbing harness; a three-point haul system that helps secure your pack when wall hauling; an internal hydration sleeve with a hose port; an internal pocket for small items; and external lid pockets with a circular profile that prevents equipment from finding their way into the far corners.
