The History of Pierre Cardin Pierre Cardin was born on July 7, 1922 near Venice, Italy. Since childhood he was fond of ballet and theatre, and his fascination with the beauty of costumes and stage design led him to dream of a career in acting. In 1963, at the age of 14, he started working as a tailors assistant. Cardin eventually moved to Paris in 1945, at which point he met Jean Cocteau and Christian Berard, with whom he made numerous costumes and masks for films such as Beauty and the Beast (1946). The following year he began to work for Christian Dior and opened his own fashion house three years later on Rue Richepanse. The young designer presented his first collection in 1953, and his bubble dresses were a resounding success throughout the world. At that time Cardin opened Eve, his first womens boutique in Paris. He later opened a mens boutique called Adam in 1957. After being recognized as the worlds best designer in 1962, Pierre Cardin began distribution of Mens Ready-to-Wear, following with a womens line in 1963. Some of his colourful designs were influence by the art of his friends, such as Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso. He received three De dOr Awards by Cartier for French Haut Couture, in 1977, 1979 and 1982. Cardin rapidly became an icon for the French fashion industry. During the late 1980s, retrospectives covering Cardins work were presented in London, Florence, Montreal, Mexico, Tokyo and Kyoto. Cardins fashion show in Moscow attracted a crowd of 2000,000 people. Pierre Cardin was a pioneer for the internationalization of fashion and trends. In 1957 he made his first trip to Japan, becoming the first couturier to embrace Japan as a high fashion market.
