Birdcage Windsor Side Chair Kit: Furniture & Decor. The seat is Eastern white pine. Windsor chairs have been made in America since the second quarter of the 18th century. At first, they were generally used as outdoor furniture. Later, they were found in both the simplest farmhouses and the largest estates, in every region of the country. Our chairs are copies of originals made in Boston, circa 1800-10. They are called birdcage inch Windsors because of the double bow in the crest. Windsor chairs are light in form, but rugged in construction. Turnings are clear hard maple.
