Both the cotton terry cloth and the canvas benefit from the protection of Teflon, which effectively resists stains and spills. A flexible, non-permeable nylon barrier (sandwiched between the insulation) prevents penetration of steam, water, and grease for added protection. A pot holder without this barrier becomes damp and heat will immediately pass through (with grease, this will happen every time it gets used before it's washed). Alternately, use its convenient loop for hanging on storage hooks.
