Department 56 Christmas In The City The Golden Ox Market: Home & Kitchen. Is this a hint to a future introduction? Busy sidewalks, street corner Santas and friendly traffic cops create the mood of our Christmas In The City Series. Christmas In The City® Series The name Golden Ox inch was inspired 2 ways. Golden for San Francisco - in tribute to one of the world's most famous China Towns and the many Chinese immigrants that settled there. Ox from the Chinese zodiac - 2009 being the year of the ox. Note the sculpted Chinese characters on the sides of the building, which identify the Golden Ox Market. Still today, as decades ago, residents of China Town visit the markets daily to select fresh produce and meats for preparing their daily meals. Sculpted bins and baskets of fruit line the side-walk and fresh poultry hangs in the open front window. The herbal medicine store occupies the second story. We can imagine the hundreds of drawers in the medicine chests along the walls inside. The building has wonderful Chinese influences in the architecture, including bright colors, a hanging Chinese lantern, and Pagoda style overhangs at the roof line and over the front door. The third floor balcony features a unique metal railing, beautiful sculpted overhead lamp, and bright decorative details on the underside of the overhang. An advertisement on the side of the building is for Jade Palace restaurant. Introduced in 1987, this series of hand-painted porcelain buildings and accessories offers dozens of exciting places to live, shop, work, dine and enjoy the city.
