Product Description
Ghana Bolgatanga Shopping Basket Purple: Kitchen & Dining. Ghana Bolgatanga Market Basket-Purple These baskets are expertly woven by the indigenous Frafra people in and around the historical town of Bolgatanga in Northen Ghana. For generations weaving has been a traditional skill in the area, as well as leather work and pottery. The baskets are made from elephant grass that grows in limitless supply in the region. The top of the grass stalk grows with broom-like flowers. These are removed for weaving, leaving the stalk intact. The baskets are finished with leather handles crafted and applied by local leather workers. A medium size basket takes about 3 days to create. Baskets are easily reshaped by submerging in water and are extremely strong and can be used in a number of ways from Farmers Market shopping to home decor. This weaving group strives to assist poor rural women of Northern Ghana in earning good wages to care for their children and families. They believe that when a woman can generate income its put food in the mouth of children and promotes self-esteem for the woman, children, and entire villages!
