This thangka is made from brocade material. Padmasambhava was a great yogi who brought Buddhism to Tibet in the eighth century. He is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. Padmasambhava went to Tibet to teach the tantras. Padmasambhava is known as the 'second Buddha'. The legend of Padmasambhava is that he was born from a lotus flower and discovered by a king who was unable to have a son. The kind brought him into his home and made him a crown prince. Padmasambhava was very intelligent even as a child. When Padmasambhava later became the king, he decided that he could do more good for the people if he was able to be relieved of his position. So he begged and pleaded to be allowed to renounce his kingship. He was unsuccessful, and so he devised a plan. He killed the son of an evil minister. This son was already dying and headed for the lower world, but Padmasambhava saved him and brought him into the higher realm where he become one of the buddhas. It is said that when he brought Buddhism to Tibet he was already 1,000 years old.
