Of the five primordial buddhas, Amitabha, the 'Buddha of Infinite Light', is associated with the western direction and the transmutation of desire. It is said that many eons ago, when he was a bodhisattva, he made strong aspiration to be able to manifest a pure land which combines the qualities of all other pure lands, and into which beings can be easily reborn.
