Product Description
Applique wall hanging, Festival: Home & Kitchen. Once she held a contest and let us choose any theme. NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. The sun shines brightly on an Andean fiesta. Known as Yunsa or Tumbamonte, this celebration usually takes place during carnival time. A tree is festooned with balloons, streamers and presents, and partygoers dance around the tree. Each one chops at the trunk with a hatchet until it falls, then everyone seizes the goodies from the branches. Maria Uyauri creates the scene in intricate arpilleria - embroidered appliques of fabric cutouts hand-stitched to a background of cotton. Crafted in three dimensions, each figure is lavishly embroidered. A display rod can slip through an opening at the top of the wall hanging. Artisan Info: Hello. I'm Maria Uyauri Celis and I was born in Lima on March 31, 1955. When I got married, I found I needed to be able to do something outside the house. One day while talking with a friend and neighbor, I mentioned that I wanted to work. She belonged to a women's support group. And in this way, I began to learn little by little. I remember a German woman came to our group and helped us with design. I chose 'The Peruvian Jungle.' She liked it a lot and I won first prize.
