Ver. 7. And it was about the space of three hours after , etc.] The
death of Ananias. So much time was taken up in burying of him; and in less time it could not well be, since the burying places of the Jews were without the city, as before observed: and if they were as distant from other cities, as they were from the cities of the Levites, they were, as Dr. Lightfoot shows from Maimonides f198 , above a mile and half off: though there is a Jewish canon which runs thus f199 ; they put carcasses, graves, and tanners, fifty cubits from a city.

So that to go thither, open the grave, inter the dead, and return, must take up so much time; and so much time his wife had to reflect upon what she and her husband had done, but seems not to have had any thought about it, at least not any remorse of conscience for it: when his wife, not knowing what was done ; she knew that her husband kept back part of the price of the land, and how much it was, and what he brought to the apostles; but she did not know that the fraud was detected, nor what followed; as that her husband was immediately struck dead, and was carried out and buried; which it is pretty much she should not in this time, when the thing was awful and shocking, the news of which must fly apace all over the city: but it looks as if the company of the saints was not broke up all this while, and that no one went out to carry it abroad, but the young men that went to bury him. Sapphira therefore, being ignorant of the whole affair, came in ; to the temple or house where the apostles were, expecting to see her husband among the apostles, and chief men, in great honour and esteem for what he had done; and that he would be on equal foot with Barnabas and others, who had sold all they had, and brought the whole price of their possessions into the common stock.


Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 1-11 - The sin of Ananias and Sapphira was, that they were ambitious of being thought eminent disciples, when they were not true disciples Hypocrites may deny themselves, may forego their worldly advantage i one instance, with a prospect of finding their account in somethin else. They were covetous of the wealth of the world, and distrustful of God and his providence. They thought they might serve both God an mammon. They thought to deceive the apostles. The Spirit of God in Peter discerned the principle of unbelief reigning in the heart of Ananias. But whatever Satan might suggest, he could not have filled the heart of Ananias with this wickedness had he not been consenting. The falsehood was an attempt to deceive the Spirit of truth, who s manifestly spoke and acted by the apostles. The crime of Ananias wa not his retaining part of the price of the land; he might have kept it all, had he pleased; but his endeavouring to impose upon the apostle with an awful lie, from a desire to make a vain show, joined with covetousness. But if we think to put a cheat upon God, we shall put fatal cheat upon our own souls. How sad to see those relations wh should quicken one another to that which is good, hardening one anothe in that which is evil! And this punishment was in reality mercy to vas numbers. It would cause strict self-examination, prayer, and dread of hypocrisy, covetousness, and vain-glory, and it should still do so. I would prevent the increase of false professors. Let us learn hence ho hateful falsehood is to the God of truth, and not only shun a direc lie, but all advantages from the use of doubtful expressions, an double meaning in our speech.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

5:7 {And it was about the space of three hours after} (egeneto de hws hwrwn triwn diastema). Literally "Now there came an interval (diastema, distance, space between) of about (hws) three hours." {When} (kai). this use of kai after egeneto is characteristic of Luke's style in the
Gospel. {Not knowing} (me eiduia). Feminine singular of second perfect active participle of oida. me usual negative of the participle in the _Koin_.
