1 Christ talks with a woman of Samaria, and reveals himself
        unto her.
    27 His disciples marvel.
31 He declares to them his zeal for God's glory.
39 Many Samaritans believe on him.
43 He departs into Galilee, and heals the ruler's son that lay
        sick at Capernaum.

Over Jacob's well the empress Helena is said to have built a
church, in the form of a cross, of which 'nothing but a few
foundations' remained in the time of Maundrell. He states
that is situated about one-third of an hour, or, about a
mile, east of Naplosa, the ancient Sychar; and Mr. Buckingham
says it is called Beer Samareea, or the well of Samaria, and
'stands at the commencement of the round vale which is thought
to be the parcel of ground bought by Jacob, and which, like
the narrow valley east of Nablous, is rich and fertile. The
mouth of the well itself had an arched or vaulted building
over it; and the only passage down to it at this moment is by
a small hole in the roof.' 'It is,' says Maundrell, 'dug in
the firm rock, and contains about three yards in diameter, and
thirty-five in depth; five of which we found full of water.'

'It is worthy of remark,' says Dr. E. D. Clarke, who visited
Cana a few years ago, 'that, walking among the ruins of a
church, we saw large massy pots, answering the description
given of the ancient vessels of the country; not preserved,
but lying about, disregarded by the present inhabitants, as
antiquities with whose original use they were unacquainted.
From their appearance, and the number of them, it was quite
evident that a practice of keeping water in large pots, each
holding from eighteen to twenty-seven gallons, was once common
in the country.' (Compare the account of the water pots.
