y a Jehú hijo de Nimsi, ungirás por rey sobre Israel; y a Eliseo hijo de Safat, de Abel-mehola, ungirás para que sea profeta en lugar de ti.
Clarke's Bible Commentary - 1 Kings 19:16
Verse 16. Elisha-shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.] Jarchi gives a strange turn to these words: "Thy prophecy (or execution of the prophetic office) does not please me, because thou art the constant accuser of my children." With all their abominations, this rabbin would have us to believe that those vile idolaters and murderers were still the beloved children of God! And why? Because God had made a covenant with their fathers; therefore said the ancient as well as the modern siren song: "Once in the covenant, always in the covenant; once a son, and a son for ever." And yet we have here the testimony of God's own prophet, and the testimony of their history, that they had forsaken the covenant, and consequently renounced all their interest in it.
John Gill's Bible Commentary
Ver. 16. And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel , etc.] This was a son of Jehoshaphat, and a grandson of Nimshi; nor does he appear to have been anointed by Elijah, but by Elisha; and being done by his order and direction was the same as if it was done by himself, unless he was twice anointed, (see 2 Kings 9:1-3) and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room ; which was in the half tribe of Manasseh, on this side Jordan; (see Gill on “ Judges 7:22”).
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 14-18 - God repeated the question, What doest thou here? Then he complained of his discouragement; and whither should God's prophets go with their complaints of that kind, but to their Master? The Lord gave him a answer. He declares that the wicked house of Ahab shall be rooted out that the people of Israel shall be punished for their sins; and he shows that Elijah was not left alone as he had supposed, and also tha a helper should at once be raised up for him. Thus all his complaint are answered and provided for. God's faithful ones are often his hidde ones, Ps 83:3, and the visible church is scarcely to be seen: the whea is lost in chaff, and the gold in dross, till the sifting, refining separating day comes. The Lord knows them that are his, though we d not; he sees in secret. When we come to heaven we shall miss many who we thought to have met there; we shall meet many whom we little though to have met there. God's love often proves larger than man's charity and far more extended.
