Verse 4. In the name of our Lord Jesus] Who is the head of the Church; and under whose authority every act is to be performed. And my spirit] My apostolical authority derived from him; with the power, sun dunamei, with the miraculous energy of the Lord Jesus, which is to inflict the punishment that you pronounce:-

Ver. 4. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ , etc.] These words contain an account of the several things and circumstances, that should attend the awful act of the apostle, in delivering this man to Satan; it would be done in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; by his command, power, and authority, and for his glory; in whose name all miraculous actions, as this was one, were performed: when ye are gathered together ; as a church, in a public manner, in one place; not to do this business, for this was purely apostolical; but to be witness of this wonderful operation, to acknowledge the justice of God in it, and that they might fear and take warning by it: and my spirit ; meaning that though he was absent in body, he should be present in spirit; and that the extraordinary gift of the Spirit of God bestowed on him would be visibly exercised upon this man before them all, as if he himself was in the midst of them; and this not by any power of his own, but with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ ; to which all such miraculous effects, as this hereafter related, are to be ascribed.
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 1-8 - The apostle notices a flagrant abuse, winked at by the Corinthians Party spirit, and a false notion of Christian liberty, seem to have saved the offender from censure. Grievous indeed is it that crime should sometimes be committed by professors of the gospel, of whic even heathens would be ashamed. Spiritual pride and false doctrine tend to bring in, and to spread such scandals. How dreadful the effect of sin! The devil reigns where Christ does not. And a man is in his kingdom, and under his power, when not in Christ. The bad example of man of influence is very mischievous; it spreads far and wide. Corrup principles and examples, if not corrected, would hurt the whole church Believers must have new hearts, and lead new lives. Their commo conversation and religious deeds must be holy. So far is the sacrific of Christ our Passover for us, from rendering personal and publi holiness unnecessary, that it furnishes powerful reasons and motive for it. Without holiness we can neither live by faith in him, nor joi in his ordinances with comfort and profit.
