SEV Biblia, Chapter 9:4
No derramarán vino al SEÑOR, ni él tomará contentamiento en sus sacrificios; como pan de enlutados les serán a ellos; todos los que coman de él, serán inmundos. Porque su pan por su alma no entrará en la Casa del SEÑOR.
Clarke's Bible Commentary - Hosea 9:4
Verse 4. As the bread of mourners] By the law, a dead body, and every thing that related to it, the house where it lay, and the persons who touched it, were all polluted and unclean, and whatever they touched was considered as defiled. See Deut. xxvi. 14; Num. xix. 11, 13, 14. For their bread for their soul] The bread for the common support of life shall not be sanctified to them by having the first-fruits presented at the temple.
John Gill's Bible Commentary
Ver. 4. They shall not offer wine [offerings] to the Lord , etc.] This is either a threatening of the cessation of sacrifices, being carried into Assyria, a strange land, where it was not lawful to offer sacrifice, there being no temple nor altar to offer in or at; and so as they would not offer to the Lord when they should, now they shall not if they would: or this respects not, the future time of their exile, but their present time now, as Kimchi observes; and so is a reproof of their present sacrifices, which are forbidden to be observed; because they were offered not in faith, nor in sincerity, but hypocritically, and before their calves: besides, the future tease is sometimes put for the present; and this way goes Schmidt; neither shall their sacrifices be pleasing unto him ; unto the Lord, if they were offered; and is a reason why they should not, because unacceptable to him, and that for the reasons before mentioned: their sacrifices [shall be] unto them as the bread of mourners: all that eat thereof [shall be] polluted ; as all that ate of the bread of such who were mourning for their dead, that partook of their funeral feasts, or ate bread with them at any time during their mourning, were defiled thereby, according to the Levitical law, and were unqualified for service, ( Leviticus 21:1 Deuteronomy 26:14); so the sacrifices of these people being offered up with a wicked mind instead of atoning for their sins, more and more defiled them; and, instead of being acceptable to God, were abominable to him: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the Lord ; in the captivity there was no house of the Lord for them to bring it into; and, when in their own land, they did not bring their offerings to the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, as they should have done, but offered them before their calves at Daniel and Bethel; and which is the thing complained of, that the bread for their souls, that is, the offerings accompanied with the “minchah”, or bread offering, for the expiation of the sins of their souls, were not brought into the house of the Lord (the future for the present); or else, this being the case, their sacrifices were reckoned by the Lord as no other than common bread, which they ate for the sustenance of their lives.
Matthew Henry Commentary
Destruction threatened for the impiety of Israel. (Hos. 8:1-4) For their idolatry. (Hos. 8:5-10) Further threatenings for the same sins (Hos. 8:11-14)
Hos. 8:1-4 When Israel was hard pressed, they would claim protectio from God, but this would be disregarded. What stead will it stand in to say, My God, I know thee, if we cannot say, My God, I love thee, serv thee, and cleave to thee only?
Hos. 8:5-10 They promised themselves plenty, peace, and victory, by worshipping idols, but their expectations came to nothing. What the sow has no stalk, no blade, or, if it have, the bud shall yield n fruit, there was nothing in them. The works of darkness are unfruitful nay, the end of those things is death. The hopes of sinners wil deceive them, and their gains will be snares. In times of danger especially in the day of judgment, all carnal devices will fail. The take a course by themselves, and like a wild ass by himself, they wil be the easier and surer prey for the lion. Man is in nothing more lik the wild ass's colt, than in seeking for that succour and tha satisfaction in the creature, which are to be had in God only. Thoug men may sorrow a little, yet if it is not after a godly sort, they wil be brought to sorrow everlastingly.
Hos. 8:11-14 It is a great sin to corrupt the worship of God, and wil be charged as sin on all who do it, how plausible soever their excuse may seem to be. The Lord had caused his law to be written for them, but they cared not to know, and would not obey it. Man seems by the temple he builds to be mindful of his Maker, yet really he has forgotten him because he has cast off all his fear; but none ever hardened his hear against God and prospered. So long as men despise the truths an precepts of God's word, and the ordinances of his worship, all the observances and offerings, however costly, of their own devising, wil be unto them for sin; for those services only are acceptable to God which are done according to his word, and through Jesus Christ __________________________________________________________________
