Verse 4.
Coast of Og king of Bashan] Concerning this person see the notes on Deut. iii. 11, and on Num. xxi. 35, &c.

The remnant or the giants] Or, Rephaim. See the notes on Gen. vi. 4; xiv. 5, and Deut. ii. 7, 11.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 4. And the coast of Og king of Bashan , etc.] The country that he reigned over, who was another king of the Amorites, smitten by Israel in the times of Moses: [which was] of the remnant of the giants ; (see Gill on “ Deuteronomy 3:11”): that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei ; of which two places (see Deuteronomy 1:4); it seems as if Og had a palace in each of those cities, and sometimes was at one and sometimes at another, as is usual with kings.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 1-6 - Fresh mercies must not
drown the remembrance of former mercies, no must the glory of the present instruments of good to the churc diminish the just honour of those who went before them, since God is the same who wrought by both. Moses gave to one part of Israel a very rich and fruitful country, but it was on the outside of Jordan. Joshu gave to all Israel the holy land, within Jordan. So the law has give to some few of God's spiritual Israel worldly blessings, earnests of good things to come; but our Lord Jesus, the true Joshua, provided for all the children of promise spiritual blessings, and the heavenl Canaan.
