SEV Biblia, Chapter 14:1
¶ Esto pues es lo que los hijos de Israel tomaron por heredad en la tierra de Canaán, lo cual les repartieron Eleazar sacerdote, y Josué hijo de Nun, y los principales de los padres de las tribus de los hijos de Israel.
Clarke's Bible Commentary - Joshua 14:1
Verse 1. Eleazar the priest, &c.] ELEAZAR, as being the minister of GOD in sacred things is mentioned first. JOSHUA, AS having the supreme command in all things civil, is mentioned next. And the HEADS or PRINCES of the twelve tribes, who in all things acted under Joshua, are mentioned last. These heads or princes were twelve, Joshua and Eleazar included; and the reader may find their names in Num. xxxiv. 19-28. It is worthy of remark that no prince was taken from the tribes of Reuben and Gad, because these had already received their inheritance on the other side of Jordan, and therefore could not be interested in this division.
John Gill's Bible Commentary
Ver. 1. And these [are the countries] which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan , etc.] Of which an exact account is given in the following chapters, particularly in the ( Joshua 15:1-19:51); which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for an inheritance unto them ; namely, ten princes, one of each tribe, who, with Eleazar and Joshua, were appointed of the Lord by name to do this business, even seven years ago, before their entrance into the land of Canaan, ( Numbers 34:17-29).
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 1-5 - The Israelites must occupy the new conquests. Canaan would have bee subdued in vain, if it had not been inhabited. Yet every man might no go and settle where he pleased. God shall choose our inheritance for us. Let us survey our heritage of present mercy, our prospect for the land of promise, eternal in the heavens. Is God any respecter of persons? Is it not better that our place, as to earthly good or sorrow should be determined by the infinite wisdom of our heavenly Father than by our own ignorance? Should not those for whom the great myster of godliness was exhibited, those whose redemption was purchased by Jesus Christ, thankfully refer their earthly concerns to his appointment?
