he was called Jacob, that is, the supplanter—one who holds, but is not held; binding the feet, but not being bound; striving and conquering; grasping in his hand his adversary’s heel, that is, victory. For to this end was the Lord born, the type of whose birth he set forth beforehand, of whom also John says in the Apocalypse: “He went forth conquering, that He should conquer.”4119

There is, if the text be genuine, some confusion here.  Melchizedek does not appear to have been, in any sense, “subsequent” to Abraham, for he probably was senior to him; and, moreover, Abraham does not appear to have been “already circumcised” carnally when Melchizedek met him. Jehoshua, Joshua, Jeshua, Jesus, are all forms of the same name.  But the change from Oshea or Hoshea to Jehoshua appears to have been made when he was sent to spy the land.  See Num. xiii. 16 (17 in LXX., who call it a surnaming).
