Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.

World English Bible

kill utterly the old man, the young man and the virgin, and little children and women; but don't come near any man on whom is the mark: and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the old men that were before the house.

Douay-Rheims - Ezekiel 9:6

Utterly destroy old and young, maidens, children and women: but upon whomsoever you shall see Thau, kill him not, and begin ye at my sanctuary. So they began at the ancient men who mere before the house.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 9:6

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Ezekiel 9:6

Verse 6. Begin at my
sanctuary.] Let those who have sinned against most mercy, and most privileges, be the first victims of justice. Those who know their Lord's will, and do it not, shall be beaten with many stripes.

The unfaithful members of Christ's church will be first visited and most punished. But let not those who belong to the synagogue of Satan exult in this, for if judgment begin at the house of God what will the end be of them who obey not the Gospel! However, the truly penitent of all descriptions in such cases shall be safe. The command of God is, "Set a mark on all them that sigh and cry;" and his command to the destroyers is, "Come not near any man on whom is the mark."

Matthew Henry Commentary
A vision denoting the
destruction of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, an the departure of the symbol of the Divine presence.

Ezek. 9:1-4 It is a great comfort to believers, that in the midst of destroyers and destructions, there is a Mediator, a great High Priest who has an interest in heaven, and in whom saints on earth have a interest. The representation of the Divine glory from above the ark removed to the threshold, denoted that the Lord was about to leave his mercy-seat, and to pronounce judgment on the people. The distinguishin character of this remnant that is to be saved, is such as sigh and cr to God in prayer, because of the abominations in Jerusalem. Those wh keep pure in times of general wickedness, God will keep safe in time of general trouble and distress.

Ezek. 9:5-11 The slaughter must begin at the sanctuary, that all ma see and know that the Lord hates sin most in those nearest to him. He who was appointed to protect, reported the matter. Christ is faithfu to the trust reposed in him. Is he commanded by his Father to secur eternal life to the chosen remnant? He says, Of all that thou has given me, I have lost none. If others perish, and we are saved, we mus ascribe the difference wholly to the mercy of our God, for we too have deserved wrath. Let us still continue to plead in behalf of others. But where the Lord shows no mercy he does no injustice; he only recompense men's ways __________________________________________________________________
