King James Bible - Joshua 23:16

When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

World English Bible

when you disobey the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down yourselves to them. Then the anger of Yahweh will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from off the good land which he has given to you."

Douay-Rheims - Joshua 23:16

When you shall have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which he hath made with you, and shall have served strange gods, and adored them : then shall the indignation of the Lord rise up quickly and speedily against you, and you shall be taken away from this excellent land, which he hath delivered to you.

Webster's Bible Translation

When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given to you.

2Ki 24:20

SEV Biblia, Chapter 23:16

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Joshua 23:16

Verse 16. Ye shall
perish quickly from off the good land] The following note from Mr. John Trapp is very judicious: "This judgment Joshua inculcates ver. 13, 15, and here, because he knew it would be a very grievous thing to them to forego so goodly a land, so lately gotten, and so short a while enjoyed. In the beginning of a speech ta hqh, the milder affections, suit best; but towards the end ta paqh, passionate and piercing passages; according to the orator. This rule Joshua observes, being Exodus utroque Caesar; no less an orator than a warrior." In all this exhortation we see how closely Joshua copies the example of his great master Moses. See Lev. xxvi. 7, 8, 14, &c.; Deuteronomy xxviii. 7; xxxii. 30. He was tenderly concerned for the welfare of the people, and with a deeply affected heart he spoke to their hearts. No people ever were more fairly and fully warned, and no people profited less by it. The threatenings pronounced here were accomplished in the Babylonish captivity, but more fully in their general dispersion since the crucifixion of our Lord. And should not every Christian fear when he reads, If God spared not the natural branches, take heed that he spare not thee? Surely a worldly, carnal, and godless Christian has no more reason to expect indulgence from the justice of God than a profligate Jew. We have a goodly land, but the justice of God can decree a captivity from it, or a state of bondage in it. The privileges that are abused are thereby forfeited. And this is as applicable to the individual as to the whole system.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 16. When ye have
transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God , which he commanded you , etc.] The law, so called, and the several precepts of it, particularly those which relate to the faith and worship of the one only true God; (see Exodus 24:7,8); and have gone and served other gods, and have bowed down yourselves unto them ; been guilty of idolatry, of having and worshipping other gods, which are no gods, with or besides the God of Israel, (see Joshua 23:7); then shall the anger of the Lord be kindled against you ; nothing being more provoking to him than idolatry, he being a jealous God of his honour and worship: and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you ; as they did at the time of the Babylonish captivity, and at the last destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 11-16 - Would we
cleave to the Lord, we must always stand upon our guard, for many a soul is lost through carelessness. Love the Lord your God, an you will not leave him. Has God been thus true to you? Be not you fals to him. He is faithful that has promised, Heb 10:23. The experience of every Christian witnesses the same truth. Conflicts may have bee severe and long, trials great and many; but at the last he wil acknowledge that goodness and mercy followed him all the days of his life. Joshua states the fatal consequences of going back; know for certainty it will be your ruin. The first step would be, friendshi with idolaters; the next would be, marrying with them; the end of tha would be, serving their gods. Thus the way of sin is down-hill, an those who have fellowship with sinners, cannot avoid having fellowshi with sin. He describes the destruction he warns them of. The goodnes of the heavenly Canaan, and the free and sure grant God has made of it will add to the misery of those who shall for ever be shut out from it Nothing will make them see how wretched they are, so much, as to se how happy they might have been. Let us watch and pray agains temptation. Let us trust in God's faithfulness, love, and power; let u plead his promises, and cleave to his commandments, then we shall be happy in life, in death, and for ever __________________________________________________________________
