Un varón de vosotros ha perseguido a mil; porque el SEÑOR vuestro Dios, él mismo ha peleado por vosotros, como él os dijo.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Joshua 23:10

Verse 10. One man of you shall chase a thousand] Do not remain inactive on the supposition that you must be much more numerous before you can drive out your enemies, for it is the Lord that shall drive out nations great and strong; and under his direction and influence one of you shall chase a thousand.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 10. One man of you shall chase a thousand , etc.] Here Kimchi and Ben Melech observe, that the future tense is put for the past, and that the sense is, one of them had chased a thousand in their war with the Canaanites; but Abarbinel disapproves of this observation, and thinks it refers to time to come, what they should be able to do if they cleaved unto the Lord; this was fulfilled in Samson, ( Judges 15:15); such a promise was made, ( Leviticus 26:8); for the Lord your God he [it is] that fighteth for you ; and no wonder then that a thousand should be put to flight by one man; the Targum interprets it of the Word of the Lord, as in ( Joshua 23:3); as he hath promised you ; (see Deuteronomy 1:30 3:22).

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 1-10 - Joshua was old and dying, let them observe what he said now. He pu them in mind of the great things God had done for them in his days. He exhorted them to be very courageous. Keep with care, do with diligence and regard with sincerity what is written. Also, very cautiously to endeavour that the heathen idolatry may be forgotten, so that it ma never be revived. It is sad that among Christians the names of the heathen gods are so commonly used, and made so familiar as they are Joshua exhorts them to be very constant. There might be many thing amiss among them, but they had not forsaken the Lord their God; the way to make people better, is to make the best of them.
