King James Bible - Judges 2:12

And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

World English Bible

and they forsook Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them: and they provoked Yahweh to anger.

Douay-Rheims - Judges 2:12

And they left the Lord the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt: and they followed strange gods, and the gods of the people that dwelt round about them, and they adored them: and they provoked the Lord to anger.

Webster's Bible Translation

And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were around them, and bowed themselves to them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 2:12

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Judges 2:12

Verse 12. Which brought them out of the land of Egypt] This was one of the highest aggravations of their offense; they
forsook the God who brought them out of Egypt; a place in which they endured the most grievous oppression and were subjected to the most degrading servitude, from which they never could have rescued themselves; and they were delivered by such a signal display of the power, justice, and mercy of God, as should never have been forgotten, because the most stupendous that had ever been exhibited. They forsook HIM, and served idols as destitute of real being as of influence and power.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 12. And they
forsook the Lord God of their fathers , etc.] The covenant God of their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and of their more immediate ancestors; his worship they forsook, neglected his tabernacle, and the service of it: which brought them out of the land of Egypt ; out of wretched misery and bondage there, with an high hand, and outstretched arm; and led them through the wilderness, and provided for them there, and brought them into the land of Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey; but all these mercies were forgotten by them: and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that [were] round about them : the gods of the Canaanites and Phoenicians, of the Egyptians, and of the Moabites, Amorites, and Edomites, that were round about them, on the borders of them; instead of one God they worshipped many, even all in or about the land of Canaan; so much given were they to idolatry: and bowed themselves unto them ; giving them all religious worship and honour they were capable of: and provoked the Lord to anger ; nothing is more provoking to him than idolatry; he being a jealous God, and will not bear any rival in worship, nor his glory to be given to another, to a strange god.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 6-23 - We have a general idea of the course of things in
Israel, during the time of the Judges. The nation made themselves as mean and miserable by forsaking God, as they would have been great and happy if they ha continued faithful to him. Their punishment answered to the evil the had done. They served the gods of the nations round about them, eve the meanest, and God made them serve the princes of the nations roun about them, even the meanest. Those who have found God true to his promises, may be sure that he will be as true to his threatenings. He might in justice have abandoned them, but he could not for pity do it The Lord was with the judges when he raised them up, and so they becam saviours. In the days of the greatest distress of the church, ther shall be some whom God will find or make fit to help it. The Israelite were not thoroughly reformed; so mad were they upon their idols, and s obstinately bent to backslide. Thus those who have forsaken the goo ways of God, which they have once known and professed, commonly gro most daring and desperate in sin, and have their hearts hardened. Their punishment was, that the Canaanites were spared, and so they wer beaten with their own rod. Men cherish and indulge their corrup appetites and passions; therefore God justly leaves them to themselves under the power of their sins, which will be their ruin. God has tol us how deceitful and desperately wicked our hearts are, but we are no willing to believe it, until by making bold with temptation we find it true by sad experience. We need to examine how matters stand with ourselves, and to pray without ceasing, that we may be rooted an grounded in love, and that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith. Le us declare war against every sin, and follow after holiness all ou days __________________________________________________________________
