Early Christian Commentary - (A.D. 100 - A.D. 325) Anf-03 iv.ix.xiii Pg 50 See Gen. xxii. 1–14. Christ, on the other hand, in His times, carried His “wood” on His own shoulders, adhering to the horns of the cross, with a thorny crown encircling His head. For Him it behoved to be made a sacrifice on behalf of all Gentiles, who “was led as a sheep for a victim, and, like a lamb voiceless before his shearer, so opened not His mouth” (for He, when Pilate interrogated Him, spake nothing1427 1427 Anf-03 iv.ix.iii Pg 3 See Gen. xii.–xv. compared with xvii. and Rom. iv. nor yet did he observe the Sabbath. Anf-03 iv.ix.iii Pg 5 There is, if the text be genuine, some confusion here. Melchizedek does not appear to have been, in any sense, “subsequent” to Abraham, for he probably was senior to him; and, moreover, Abraham does not appear to have been “already circumcised” carnally when Melchizedek met him. Comp. Gen. xiv. with Gen. xvii. “But again,” (you say) “the son of Moses would upon one occasion have been choked by an angel, if Zipporah,1165 1165 Anf-01 ix.vi.xvii Pg 2 Gen. xvii. 9–11. This same does Ezekiel the prophet say with regard to the Sabbaths: “Also I gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord, that sanctify them.”3984 3984 Anf-01 ix.viii.xl Pg 4 Judg. xiv. 6–19. For thus, according to the holy apostle, the sin of fornication is perpetrated against the body, as involving also sin against the temple of God.4883 4883 Anf-01 ii.ii.xiii Pg 2 Jer. ix. 23, 24; 1 Cor. i. 31; 2 Cor. x. 17. ), being especially mindful of the words of the Lord Jesus which He spake, teaching us meekness and long-suffering. For thus He spoke: “Be ye merciful, that ye may obtain mercy; forgive, that it may be forgiven to you; as ye do, so shall it be done unto you; as ye judge, so shall ye be judged; as ye are kind, so shall kindness be shown to you; with what measure ye mete, with the same it shall be measured to you.”56 56

But thou wilt say, “Yea, verily the people are circumcised for a seal.” But so also is every Syrian and Arab, and all the priests of idols: are these then also within the bond of His covenant?1566 1566 Dressel and Hilgenfeld read, “their covenant,” as does Cod. Sin.; we have followed Hefele. Yea, the Egyptians also practise circumcision. Learn then, my children, concerning all things richly,1567 1567 Cod. Sin. has “children of love,” omitting “richly,” and inserting it before “looking forward.” that Abraham, the first who enjoined circumcision, looking forward in spirit to Jesus, practised that rite, having received the mysteries1568
Anf-01 viii.ii.liii Pg 4 The following words are found, not in Isaiah, but in Jer. ix. 26. the prophet; for he spoke as follows “Israel is uncircumcised in heart, but the Gentiles are uncircumcised in the flesh.” So many things therefore, as these, when they are seen with the eye, are enough to produce conviction and belief in those who embrace the truth, and are not bigoted in their opinions, nor are governed by their passions.
