King James Bible - Isaiah 29:4

And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

World English Bible

You will be brought down, and will speak out of the ground. Your speech will mumble out of the dust. Your voice will be as of one who has a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and your speech will whisper out of the dust.

Douay-Rheims - Isaiah 29:4

Thou shalt be brought down, thou shalt speak out of the earth, and thy speech shall be heard out of the ground: and thy voice shall be from the earth like that of the python, and out of the ground thy speech shall mutter.

Webster's Bible Translation

And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 29:4

Entonces serás humillada; hablarás desde la tierra, y tu habla saldrá del polvo; y será tu voz de la tierra, como voz de pitón; y tu habla susurrará desde el polvo.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Isaiah 29:4

Verse 4. And thy
speech shall be low out of the dust "And from out of the dust thou shalt utter a feeble speech"] That the souls of the dead uttered a feeble stridulous sound, very different from the natural human voice, was a popular notion among the heathens as well as among the Jews. This appears from several passages of their poets; Homer, Virgil, Horace. The pretenders to the art of necromancy, who were chiefly women, had an art of speaking with a feigned voice, so as to deceive those who applied to them, by making them believe that it was the voice of the ghost. They had a way of uttering sounds, as if they were formed, not by the organs of speech, but deep in the chest, or in the belly; and were thence called eggastrimuqoi, ventriloqui: they could make the voice seem to come from beneath the ground, from a distant part, in another direction, and not from themselves; the better to impose upon those who consulted them. exepithdev to genov touto ton amudron hcon epithdeuontai, ina dia thn asafeian thv fwnhv ton tou yeudouv apodidraskwsin elegcon. Psellus De Daemonibus, apud Bochart, i. p. 731. "These people studiously acquire, and affect on purpose, this sort of obscure sound; that by the uncertainty of the voice they may the better escape being detected in the cheat. " From these arts of the necromancers the popular notion seems to have arisen, that the ghost's voice was a weak, stridulous, almost inarticulate sort of sound, very different from the speech of the living.
Matthew Henry Commentary
Judgements on Jerusalem and on its enemies. (Is. 29:1-8) The senselessness and hypocrisy of the Jews. (Is. 29:9-16) The conversio of the Gentiles, and future blessings for the Jews. (Is. 29:17-24)

Is. 29:1-8 Ariel may signify the altar of burnt-offerings. Le Jerusalem know that outward religious services will not make men fre from judgements. Hypocrites never can please God, nor make their peac with him. God had often and long, by a host of angels, encamped roun about Jerusalem for protection and deliverance; but now he fough against it. Proud looks and proud language shall be brought down by humbling providences. The destruction of Jerusalem's enemies i foretold. The army of Sennacherib went as a dream; and thus the multitudes, that through successive ages fight against God's altar an worship, shall fall. Speedily will sinners awake from their soothin dreams in the pains of hell.

Is. 29:9-16 The security of sinners in sinful ways, is cause for lamentation and wonder. The learned men, through prejudice, said tha the Divine prophecies were obscure; and the poor urged their want of learning. The Bible is a sealed book to every man, learned of unlearned, till he begins to study it with a simple heart and teachable spirit, that he may thence learn the truth and the will of God. To worship God, is to approach him. And if the heart be full of his love and fear, out of the abundance of it the mouth will speak; but there are many whose religion is lip-labour only. When they pretend to be speaking to God, they are thinking of a thousand foolish things They worship the God of Israel according to their own devices. Number are only formal in worship. And their religion is only to comply with custom, and to serve their own interest. But the wanderings of mind and defects in devotion, which are the believer's burden, are very different from the withdrawing of the heart from God, so severel blamed. And those who make religion no more than a pretence, to serve turn, deceive themselves. And as those that quarrel with God, so thos that think to conceal themselves from him, in effect charge him with folly. But all their perverse conduct shall be entirely done away.

Is. 29:17-24 The wonderful change here foretold, may refer to the affairs of Judah, though it looks further. When a great harvest of souls was gathered to Christ from among the Gentiles, then the wilderness was turned into a fruitful field; and the Jewish church that had long been a fruitful field, became as a deserted forest. Thos who, when in trouble, can truly rejoice in God, shall soon have caus greatly to rejoice in him. The grace of meekness contributes to the increase of our holy joy. The enemies who were powerful shall becom mean and weak. To complete the repose of God's people, the scorners a home shall be cut off by judgements. All are apt to speak unadvisedly and to mistake what they hear, but it is very unfair to make a man a offender for a word. They did all they could to bring those int trouble who told them of their faults. But He that redeemed Abraham ou of his snares and troubles, will redeem those who are, by faith, his true seed, out of theirs. It will be the greatest comfort to godl parents to see their children renewed creatures, the work of God' grace. May those who now err in spirit, and murmur against the truth come to understanding, and learn true doctrine. The Spirit of trut shall set right their mistakes, and lead them into all truth. Thi should encourage us to pray for those that have erred, and ar deceived. All who murmured at the truths of God, as hard sayings, shal learn and be aware what God designed in all. See the change religio produces in the hearts of men, and the peace and pleasure of a humbl and devout spirit __________________________________________________________________
