SEV Biblia, Chapter 21:30

mas David no pudo ir allá a consultar a Dios, porque estaba espantado a causa del cuchillo del ángel del SEÑOR.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - 1 Chronicles 21:30

Verse 30. Because of the
sword of the angel] This is given as a reason why David built an altar in the threshing-floor of Ornan: he was afraid to go to Gibeon, because of the sword of the destroying angel, or he was afraid of delaying the offerings so long as his going thither would require, lest the destroying angel should in the mean while exterminate the people; therefore he hastily built an altar in that place, and on it made the requisite offerings, and by the fire from heaven God showed that he had accepted his act and his devotion. Such interventions as these must necessarily maintain in the minds of the people a full persuasion of the truth and Divine origin of their religion.

For a more circumstantial account of these transactions, see the notes on 2 Sam. xxiv. 1, Ac., in which several difficulties of the text are removed.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 30. But David could not go before it to inquire of God , etc.] Which yet was the proper place to seek the Lord in: the reason follows, for he was afraid, because of the sword of the angel of the Lord ; which had so terrified him, that he was so weak that he could not go; and he feared that, should he attempt to go, while he was going thither, at such a distance, the angel would make a terrible slaughter in Jerusalem, and therefore he durst not go and leave it; and besides, as the Lord had commanded him to build an altar there, he might fear it would displease him, should he depart from it; and the rather, as hereby he pointed out to him the place where the temple should be built, and sacrifices offered, as appears from what he says in the beginning of the next chapter.

Matthew Henry Commentary

David's wars.

--Though the Lord will severely correct the sins of his believin people, he will not leave them in the hands of their enemies. Hi assistance will overcome all advantages of number and strength of thos that defy his Israel. All that trust in Christ, shall be made more tha conquerors through him that loveth them.

David's numbering the people.

--No mention is made in this book of David's sin in the matter of Uriah, neither of the troubles that followed it: they had no needfu connexion with the subjects here noted. But David's sin, in numberin the people, is related: in the atonement made for that sin, there wa notice of the place on which the temple should be built. The command to David to build an altar, was a blessed token of reconciliation. God testified his acceptance of David's offerings on this altar. Thu Christ was made sin, and a curse for us; it pleased the Lord to bruis him, that through him, God might be to us, not a consuming Fire, but reconciled God. It is good to continue attendance on those ordinance in which we have experienced the tokens of God's presence, and have found that he is with us of a truth. Here God graciously met me therefore I will still expect to meet him __________________________________________________________________
