SEV Biblia, Chapter 12:12

¶ Porque de la manera que es un cuerpo, y tiene muchos miembros, empero todos los miembros de este cuerpo, siendo muchos, son un cuerpo, así tambin el Cristo.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - 1 Corinthians 12:12

Verse 12. For as the body is one] Though the human body have many members, and though it be composed of a great variety of parts, yet it is but one entire system; every part and member being necessary to the
integrity or completeness of the whole.

So also is Christ.] That is, So is the Church the body of Christ, being composed of the different officers already mentioned, and especially those enumerated, ver. 28, apostles, prophets, teachers, &c. It cannot be supposed that Christ is composed of many members, &c., and therefore the term Church must be understood, unless we suppose, which is not improbable, that the term o cristov, Christ, is used to express the Church, or whole body of Christian believers.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 12. For as the body is one , etc.] That is, an human body; for of this the apostle speaks, and takes a simile, and forms a comparison from, showing the union among saints, and their mutual participation of the various gifts of the Spirit; for an human body is but one body, and not more. And hath many members ; as eyes, ears, hands, feet, etc.]. And all the members of that one body being many are one body ; as numerous as they may be, they all belong to, and make up but one body; performing different offices, for which they are naturally fitted for the good of the whole: so also to Christ ; not personal, but mystical; not the head alone, or the members by themselves, but head and members as constituting one body, the church. The church, in union with Christ, the head, is but one general assembly, and church of the firstborn written in heaven, though consisting of the various persons of Gods elect, who are closely united one to another, and their head Christ; and therefore are denominated from him, and called by his name; (see Romans 9:3 Jeremiah 33:16).

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 12-26 -
Christ and his church form one body, as Head and members. Christian become members of this body by baptism. The outward rite is of Divin institution; it is a sign of the new birth, and is called therefore the washing of regeneration, Tit 3:5. But it is by the Spirit, only by the renewing of the Holy Ghost, that we are made members of Christ's body And by communion with Christ at the Lord's supper, we are strengthened not by drinking the wine, but by drinking into one Spirit. Each membe has its form, place, and use. The meanest makes a part of the body There must be a distinction of members in the body. So Christ's member have different powers and different places. We should do the duties of our own place, and not murmur, or quarrel with others. All the member of the body are useful and necessary to each other. Nor is there member of the body of Christ, but may and ought to be useful to fellow-members. As in the natural body of man, the members should be closely united by the strongest bonds of love; the good of the whol should be the object of all. All Christians are dependent one upo another; each is to expect and receive help from the rest. Let us the have more of the spirit of union in our religion.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

12:12 {So also is
Christ} (houtws kai ho cristos). One would naturally expect Paul here to say houtws kai to swma tou cristou (so also is the body of Christ). He will later call Christ the Head of the Body the Church as in #Col 1:18,24; Eph 5:23,30. Aristotle had used swma of the state as the body politic. What Paul here means is Christ as the Head of the Church has a body composed of the members who have varied gifts and functions like the different members of the human body. They are all vitally connected with the Head of the body and with each other. this idea he now elaborates in a remarkable manner.
