King James Bible - 1 Samuel 18:23

And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

World English Bible

Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. David said, "Does it seems to you a light thing to be the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?"

Douay-Rheims - 1 Samuel 18:23

And the servants of Saul spoke all these words in the ears of David. And David said: Doth it seem to you a small matter to be the king's son in law? But I am a poor man, and of small ability.

Webster's Bible Translation

And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

1Jo 3:1

SEV Biblia, Chapter 18:23

Y los criados de Saúl hablaron estas palabras a los oídos de David. Y David dijo: ¿Os parece a vosotros que es poco ser yerno del rey, siendo yo un hombre pobre y de ninguna estima?

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 23. And Saul’s
servants spake these words in the ears of David , etc.] Those before related, which Saul commanded them to speak, which they delivered exactly according to their orders, with an audible voice, clearly, plainly, and distinctly, so that David might hear and understand them: and David said, seemeth it to you [a] light [thing] to be a king’s son in law ; a small a trifling matter, an easy thing to come into, every thing requisite to it: seeing that I [am] a poor man ; and not able to give a dowry suitable to the daughter of a king; it being usual in those times for a man to give a dowry to, and not receive a portion with a wife; and which also was the custom of the Germans, as Tacitus relates; and this was to be according to the rank and quality of the person married, and which in this case David was not equal to: and lightly esteemed ? not by the people of Israel and Judah, who loved him, as he was loved even by the servants of Saul, at least in profession; but by Saul himself, who had slighted him in giving his elder daughter to another man, when he had promised her to him, which was discouraging to David, and resented by him.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 12-30 - For a long time
David was kept in continual apprehension of falling by the hand of Saul, yet he persevered in meek and respectful behaviou towards his persecutor. How uncommon is such prudence and discretion especially under insults and provocations! Let us inquire if we imitat this part of the exemplary character before us. Are we behaving wisel in all our ways? Is there no sinful omission, no rashness of spirit nothing wrong in our conduct? Opposition and perverseness in others will not excuse wrong tempers in us, but should increase our care, an attention to the duties of our station. Consider Him that endure contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be weary and faint in your minds, Heb 12:3. If David magnified the honour of being son-in-la to king Saul, how should we magnify the honour of being sons to the King of kings __________________________________________________________________
