Y como todo el pueblo viniese a dar de comer pan a David siendo aún de día, David juró, diciendo: Así me haga Dios y así me añada, si antes que se ponga el sol gustare yo pan, o cualquier otra cosa.

Ver. 35. And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day , etc.] The custom was to bury in the daytime, and after the funeral was over to provide and send in food to the relations of the deceased, and come and eat with them; as was also the usage with the Greeks and Romans f72 ; (see Gill on “ Jeremiah 16:5, 7”) and kings themselves used to attend those feasts; for the Jews say f73 , “when they cause him (the king) to eat, all the people sit upon the ground, and he sits upon the bed;” but in this case David refused to eat with them: David sware, saying, so do God to me, and more also ; may the greatest evils, and such as I care not to mention, befall me; and even more and worse than I can think of and express: if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down ; perhaps the funeral was in the morning, as funerals with the Jews generally now are; for otherwise if it was now towards evening, his abstinence from food till that time would not have seemed so much, nor required much notice, and still less an oath.

Verses 22-39 - Judgments are prepared for such scorners as Abner; but Joab, in what he did, acted wickedly. David laid Abner's murder deeply to heart, and in many ways expressed his detestation of it. The guilt of blood brings curse upon families: if men do not avenge it, God will. It is a sad thing to die like a fool, as they do that any way shorten their ow days, and those who make no provision for another world. Who would be fond of power, when a man may have the name of it, and must be accountable for it, yet is hampered in the use of it? David ought to have done his duty, and then trusted God with the issue. Carnal polic spared Joab. The Son of David may long delay, but never fails to punis impenitent sinners. He who now reigns upon the throne of David, has kingdom of a nobler kind. Whatever He doeth, is noticed by all his willing people, and is pleasing to them __________________________________________________________________
