Si me reía a ellos, no lo creían; y no abatían la luz de mi rostro.

Verse 24. I laughed on them, they believed it not ] Similar to that expression in the Gospel, Luke xxiv. xl1: And while they believed not for joy, and wondered, he said -. Our version is sufficiently perspicuous, and gives the true sense of the original, only it should be read in the indicative and not in the subjunctive mood: I laughed on them-they believed it not. We have a similar phrase: The news was too good to be true. The light of my countenance ] This evidence of my benevolence and regard. A smile is, metaphorically, the light of the countenance.
They cast not down. ] They gave me no occasion to change my sentiments or feelings towards them. I could still smile upon them, and they were then worthy of my approbation. Their change he refers to in the beginning of the next chapter.
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 18-25 - Being thus honoured and useful, Job had hoped to die in peace an honour, in a good old age. If such an expectation arise from livel faith in the providence and promise of God, it is well; but if from conceit of our own wisdom, and dependence on changeable, earthl things, it is ill grounded, and turns to sin. Every one that has the spirit of wisdom, has not the spirit of government; but Job had both Yet he had the tenderness of a comforter. This he thought upon with pleasure, when he was himself a mourner. Our Lord Jesus is a King wh hates iniquity, and upon whom the blessing of a world ready to peris comes.
