Verse 4. These are the beasts which ye shall eat] On Leviticus 11. I have entered into considerable detail relative to the clean and unclean animals there mentioned. For the general subject, the reader is referred to the notes on that chapter; but as there are particulars mentioned here which Moses does not introduce in Leviticus, it will be necessary to consider them in this place. The ox] rw shor: BOS, fifth order Pecora, of the genus MAMMALIA, species 41. This term includes all clean animals of the beeve kind; not only the ox properly so called, but also the bull, the cow, heifer, and calf.
The sheep] h seh: OVIS, fifth order Pecora, of the genus MAMMALIA, species 40; including the ram, the wether, the ewe, and the lamb.
The goat] z[ az: CAPRA, fifth order Pecora, of the genus MAMMALIA, species 39; including the he-goat, she-goat, and kid. The words in the text, µybk h seh chesabim, signify the lamb or young of sheep; and µyz[ h seh izzim, the young or kid of goats: but this is a Hebrew idiom which signifies every creature of the genus, as wna nb ben enosh and µda b ben adam, son of man, signify any human being. See Psa. cxliv. 3; Job xxv. 6.
The flesh of these animals is universally allowed to be the most wholesome and nutritive. They live on the very best vegetables; and having several stomachs, their food is well concocted, and the chyle formed from it the most pure because the best elabourated, as it is well refined before it enters into the blood. Ver. 4. These are the beasts which they shall eat , etc.] That is, which they might lawfully eat of, which were allowed for their food; for they were not obliged to eat of them if they did not choose it: the ox, the sheep, and the goat ; which were creatures used in sacrifice, and the only ones, yet nevertheless they might be used for food if chosen.

Verses 1-21 - Moses tells the people of Israel how God had given them thre distinguishing privileges, which were their honour, and figures of those spiritual blessings in heavenly things, with which God has in Christ blessed us. Here is election; "The Lord hath chosen thee." He did not choose them because they were by their own acts a peculia people to him above other nations, but he chose them that they might be so by his grace; and thus were believers chosen, Eph 1:4. Here i adoption; "Ye are the children of the Lord your God;" not because God needed children, but because they were orphans, and needed a father Every spiritual Israelite is indeed a child of God, a partaker of his nature and favour. Here is sanctification; "Thou art a holy people. God's people are required to be holy, and if they are holy, they ar indebted to the grace God which makes them so. Those whom God choose to be his children, he will form to be a holy people, and zealous of good works. They must be careful to avoid every thing which migh disgrace their profession, in the sight of those who watch for their halting. Our heavenly Father forbids nothing but for our welfare. D thyself no harm; do not ruin thy health, thy reputation, thy domesti comforts, thy peace of mind. Especially do not murder thy soul. Do no be the vile slave of thy appetites and passions. Do not render all around thee miserable, and thyself wretched; but aim at that which i most excellent and useful. The laws which regarded many sorts of fles as unclean, were to keep them from mingling with their idolatrou neighbours. It is plain in the gospel, that these laws are now don away. But let us ask our own hearts, Are we of the children of the Lor our God? Are we separate from the ungodly world, in being set apart to God's glory, the purchase of Christ's blood? Are we subjects of the work of the Holy Ghost? Lord, teach us from these precepts how pure an holy all thy people ought to live!
