Luego, pues, que los de Israel volvieron la espalda en la batalla, y los de Benjamín habían comenzado a derribar heridos de Israel unos treinta hombres, de tal manera que ya decían: Ciertamente ellos han caído delante de nosotros, como en la primera batalla.
John Gill's Bible Commentary
Ver. 39. And when the men of Israel retired in the battle , etc.] Which is before expressed by their fleeing, and giving place to the Benjaminites, and was only an artifice of theirs, to draw them off from the city: Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons ; which was done in the highways leading to Shiloh and Gibeah in the field, ( Judges 20:31) for they said, surely they are smitten down before us as in the first battle ; when the greater number of the Israelites were slain by them.
Matthew Henry Commentary
The tribe of Benjamin nearly extirpated. --The Israelites' abhorrence of the crime committed at Gibeah, an their resolution to punish the criminals, were right; but they forme their resolves with too much haste and self-confidence. The eterna ruin of souls will be worse, and more fearful, than these desolation of a tribe __________________________________________________________________
