John Gill's Bible Commentary Ver. 23. And they ran and fetched him thence , etc.] Being in haste to see their king elect, and proclaim him: and when he stood among the people ; being brought among them, and presented to them: he was higher than any of the people, from the shoulders, and upwards ; which made him look very graceful and majestic; height of stature, and a comely form, as Kimchi observes, recommend to royal dignity; and make the people stand more in awe of a prince, and have always been reckoned among all other nations to make a prince venerable, (see Gill on “ Samuel 9:2”).
Matthew Henry Commentary Verses 17-27 - Samuel tells the people, Ye have this day rejected your God. So littl fond was Saul now of that power, which soon after, when he possesse it, he could not think of parting with, that he hid himself. It is goo to be conscious of our unworthiness and insufficiency for the service to which we are called; but men should not go into the contrar extreme, by refusing the employments to which the Lord and the churc call them. The greater part of the people treated the matter with indifference. Saul modestly went home to his own house, but wa attended by a band of men whose hearts God disposed to support his authority. If the heart bend at any time the right way, it is becaus He has touched it. One touch is enough when it is Divine. Other despised him. Thus differently are men affected to our exalte Redeemer. There is a remnant who submit to him, and follow him whereve he goes; they are those whose hearts God has touched, whom he has mad willing. But there are others who despise him, who ask, How shall thi man save us? They are offended in him, and they will be punished __________________________________________________________________
