King James Bible - Joshua 7:12

Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

World English Bible

Therefore the children of Israel can't stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

Douay-Rheims - Joshua 7:12

Neither can Israel stand before his enemies, but he shall flee from them: because he is defiled with the anathema. I will be no more with you, till you destroy him that is guilty of this wickedness.

Webster's Bible Translation

Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 7:12

Por esto los hijos de Israel no podrán estar delante de sus enemigos, sino que delante de sus enemigos volverán las espaldas; por cuanto han estado en el anatema; ni estaré más con vosotros, si no destruyereis el anatema de en medio de vosotros.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Joshua 7:12

Verse 12. Because they were accursed] From this verse it appears that the nature of the execration or anathema was such, that those who took of the thing
doomed to destruction fell immediately under the same condemnation. The inhabitants of Jericho and all that they had were accursed: therefore they and all their substance were to be destroyed. The Israelites took of the accursed thing, and therefore became accursed with it.

This was certainly understood when the curse was pronounced: Every man who touches this property shall be involved in the same execration.

Achan therefore was sufficiently aware of the risk he ran in taking any part of the anathematized thing; and when viewed in this light, the punishment inflicted on him will appear to be perfectly just and proper.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 12. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies , etc.] Being forsaken of God for the sin committed among them: [but] turned [their] backs before their enemies : had not courage to face them, but fled as soon as they appeared: because they were accursed ; of God for the accursed thing that had been taken, as was threatened would be their case, should they take any of it; ( Joshua 6:18); neither will I be with you any more, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you ; that is, until they had put to death the person who had taken of the accursed thing, and made himself thereby accursed, and even all the camp of Israel; till this was done, the Lord would not be with them to protect and defend them, and give them success against their enemies.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 10-15 -
God awakens Joshua to inquiry, by telling him that when this accurse thing was put away, all would be well. Times of danger and troubl should be times of reformation. We should look at home, into our ow hearts, into our own houses, and make diligent search to find out i there be not some accursed thing there, which God sees and abhors; some secret lust, some unlawful gain, some undue withholding from God of from others. We cannot prosper, until the accursed thing be destroye out of our hearts, and put out of our habitations and our families, an forsaken in our lives. When the sin of sinners finds them out, God is to be acknowledged. With a certain and unerring judgment, the righteou God does and will distinguish between the innocent and the guilty; s that though the righteous are of the same tribe, and family, an household with the wicked, yet they never shall be treated as the wicked.
