King James Bible - 2 Corinthians 8:12

For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

World English Bible

For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don't have.

Douay-Rheims - 2 Corinthians 8:12

For if the will be forward, it is accepted according to that which a man hath, not according to that which he hath not.

Webster's Bible Translation

For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what a man hath, and not according to what he hath not.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 8:12

Porque si primero hay la voluntad pronta, ser acepta por lo que tiene, no por lo que no tiene.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - 2 Corinthians 8:12

Verse 12. According to that a man hath] According to his real property; not taking that which
belongs to his own family, and is indispensably necessary for their support; and not taking that which belongs to others; viz. what he owes to any man.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 10-15 - Good purposes are like buds and blossoms, pleasant to behold, and giv hopes of good fruit; but they are lost, and signify nothing withou good
deeds. Good beginnings are well; but we lose the benefit, unles there is perseverance. When men purpose that which is good, an endeavour, according to their ability, to perform also, God will no reject them for what it is not in their power to do. But this scriptur will not justify those who think good meanings are enough, or that goo purposes, and the mere profession of a willing mind, are enough to save. Providence gives to some more of the good things of this world and to some less, that those who have abundance might supply others wh are in want. It is the will of God, that by our mutual supplying on another, there should be some sort of equality; not such a levelling a would destroy property, for in such a case there could be no exercis of charity. All should think themselves concerned to relieve those in want. This is shown from the gathering and giving out the manna in the wilderness, Ex 16:18. Those who have most of this world, have no mor than food and raiment; and those who have but little of this world seldom are quite without them.

Vincent's NT Word Studies

12. If there be first a willing
mind (ei h proqumia prokeitai). The error of the A.V. consists in regarding pro in prokeitai as indicating priority in time; be first; whereas it signifies position, before one; as "the hope, or the race, or the joy which is set before us." Heb. vi. 18; xii. 1, 2; or "the example which is set forth," Jude 7. Hence Rev., correctly, if the readiness is there.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

8:12 {Is there} (prokeitai).
Lies before one. Old word. {Acceptable} (euprosdektos). See on 6:2. {According as a man hath} (kaqo ean ecei). Indefinite comparative clause with ean and present subjunctive ecei. Clearly God does not expect us to give what we do not have. {Not according as he hath not} (ou kaqo ouk ecei). Note present indicative rather than subjunctive because a specific case is presented. See #9:7; Mr 12:43.
