Clarke's Bible Commentary - Acts 27:30

Verse 30. The shipmen] The sailors-let down the boat. Having lowered the boat from the deck into the sea, they pretended that it was necessary to carry some anchors ahead, to keep her from being carried in a dangerous direction by the tide, but with the real design to make for shore, and so leave the prisoners and the passengers to their fate. This was timely noticed by the pious and prudent apostle; who, while simply depending on the promise of God, was watching for the safety and comfort of all.

Ver. 30. And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship , etc.] To save their lives, concluding that it was in the utmost danger, and that it would quickly, notwithstanding the anchors cast out, break away, and fall upon the rocks, and split to pieces: when they had let down the boat into the sea ; which before they had taken up into the ship, ( Acts 27:16,17) and now they let it down, in order to get into it, and make their escape: under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship ; the foremost part of the ship, the prow of it; their pretence in attempting to get out of the ship, and into the boat, was, that whereas there were anchors cast out of the stern, or hinder part of the ship, so they would cast out others, from the fore part of it; and �stretch� them �out�, as the word signifies, or carry them further out into the sea, for the security of the ship; and to do which, it was necessary to use the boat.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 30-38 - God, who appointed the end, that they should be saved, appointed the means, that they should be saved by the help of these shipmen. Duty is ours, events are God's; we do not trust God, but tempt him, when we saw we put ourselves under his protection, if we do not use proper means such as are within our power, for our safety. But how selfish are me in general, often even ready to seek their own safety by the destruction of others! Happy those who have such a one as Paul in their company, who not only had intercourse with Heaven, but was of a enlivening spirit to those about him. The sorrow of the world work death, while joy in God is life and peace in the greatest distresse and dangers. The comfort of God's promises can only be ours by believing dependence on him, to fulfil his word to us; and the salvation he reveals must be waited for in use of the means he appoints. If God has chosen us to salvation, he has also appointed tha we shall obtain it by repentance, faith, prayer, and perseverin obedience; it is fatal presumption to expect it in any other way. It is an encouragement to people to commit themselves to Christ as their Saviour, when those who invite them, clearly show that they do s themselves.

30. Under color (profasei). Lit., on pretense.

Cast (ekteinein). Lit., to stretch out. The meaning is, to carry out an anchor to a distance from the prow by means of the small boat. Rev., lay out.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

27:30 {The sailors} (twn nautwn). Old word from naus (ship), in N.T. only here, verse #30; Re 18:17. {Were seeking} (zetountwn). Genitive absolute again with present active participle of zetew to seek. {Had lowered} (calasantwn). Aorist active participle of calazw. {Under color} (profasei). Possibly the same word as "prophecy" (from pro-femi, to speak forth), but here pretence, pretext, although it may come from profainw, to show forth. The use here is an old one and appears also in #Mr 12:40; Lu 20:47; 1Th 2:5; Php 1:18. {As though} (hws). The alleged reason, a common Greek idiom with hws and the participle (Robertson, _Grammar_, p. 966). Here with mellontwn. {From the foreship} (ek prwires). Old word for prow of the ship. In the N.T. only here and verse #41. Note here ekteinein (lay out, stretch out) rather than rhiyantes (casting) in verse #29, for they pretended to need the small boat to stretch out or lay out the anchors in front.
