King James Bible - Esther 2:14

In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.

World English Bible

In the evening she went, and on the next day she returned into the second women's house, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's eunuch, who kept the concubines. She came in to the king no more, unless the king delighted in her, and she was called by name.

Douay-Rheims - Esther 2:14

And she that went in at evening, came out in the morning, and from thence she was conducted to the second house, that was under the hand of Susagaz the eunuch, who had the charge over the king's concubines: neither could she re- turn any more to the king, unless the king desired it, and had ordered her by name to come.

Webster's Bible Translation

In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, who kept the concubines: she came in to the king no more, except that the king delighted in her, and she was called by name.

VERSE (14) -
Es 4:11 Ge 34:19 De 21:14 Isa 62:4,5

SEV Biblia, Chapter 2:14

Ella venía a la tarde, y a la mañana se volvía a la casa segunda de las mujeres, al cargo de Saasgaz eunuco del rey, guarda de las concubinas; no venía más al rey, salvo si el rey la quería, y era llamada por nombre.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Esther 2:14

Verse 14. She returned into the second
house] This was the place where the king's concubines were kept. They went out no more, and were never given in marriage to any man, and saw the king's face no more unless specially called.

Custody of Shaashgaz] This is probably another Persian name; sheshkhunj, beardless, a proper epithet of a eunuch; or sestgunj, weak loins, for the same reason. Names of this kind at once show the reason of their imposition, by describing the state of the person.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 14. In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women , etc.] Or the other apartment of the house of the women, where were kept those the king had made his concubines or secondary wives. Aben Ezra interprets it the second time, and so the Targum by “again”: to the custody of Shaashgaz the king’s chamberlain, which kept the concubines ; of which the kings of Persia had a great number; Darius, whom Alexander conquered, had three hundred and sixty f89 : she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she was called by name ; but remained shut up in the house, and might not lie with, nor be married to, another man.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 1-20 - We see to what absurd practices those came, who were
destitute of Divine revelation, and what need there was of the gospel of Christ, to purify men from the lusts of the flesh, and to bring them back to the original institution of marriage. Esther was preferred as queen. Thos who suggest that Esther committed sin to come at this dignity, do no consider the custom of those times and countries. Every one that the king took was married to him, and was his wife, though of a lower rank But how low is human nature sunk, when such as these are the leadin pursuits and highest worldly happiness of men! Disappointment an vexation must follow; and he most wisely consults his enjoyment, eve in this present life, who most exactly obeys the precepts of the Divin law. But let us turn to consider the wise and merciful providence of God, carrying on his deep but holy designs in the midst of all this And let no change in our condition be a pretext for forgetting ou duties to parents, or the friends who have stood in their place.
