King James Bible - Jeremiah 19:11

And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.

World English Bible

and shall tell them, Thus says Yahweh of Armies: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter's vessel, that can't be made whole again; and they shall bury in Topheth, until there be no place to bury.

Douay-Rheims - Jeremiah 19:11

And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: even so will I break this people, and this city, as the potter's vessel is broken, which cannot be made whole again: and they shall be buried in Topheth, because there is no other place to bury in.

Webster's Bible Translation

And shalt say to them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 19:11

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Jeremiah 19:11

Verse 11. Even so will I
break this people and this city] The breaking of the bottle was the symbolical representation of the destruction of the city and of the state.

That cannot be made whole again] This seems to refer rather to the final destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, than to what was done by the Chaldeans. Jerusalem was healed after 70 years: but nearly 1800 years have elapsed since Jerusalem was taken and destroyed by the Romans; and it was then so broken, that it could not be made whole again.

Matthew Henry Commentary
By the type of
breaking an earthen vessel, Jeremiah is to predict the destruction of Judah.

Jer. 19:1-9 The prophet must give notice of ruin coming upon Judah an Jerusalem. Both rulers and ruled must attend to it. That place whic holiness made the joy of the whole earth, sin made the reproach an shame of the whole earth. There is no fleeing from God's justice, but by fleeing to his mercy.

Jer. 19:10-15 The potter's vessel, after it is hardened, can never be pieced again when it is broken. And as the bottle was broken, so shal Judah and Jerusalem be broken by the Chaldeans. No human hand can repair it; but if they return to the Lord he will heal. As they fille Tophet with the slain sacrificed to their idols, so will God fill the whole city with the slain that shall fall as sacrifices to his justice Whatever men may think, God will appear as terrible against sin an sinners as the Scriptures state; nor shall the unbelief of men make his promise or his threatenings of no effect. The obstinacy of sinners i sinful ways, is their own fault; if they are deaf to the word of God it is because they have stopped their ears. We have need to pray tha God, by his grace, would deliver us from hardness of heart, an contempt of his word and commandments __________________________________________________________________
