VERSE (12) -
De 1:44

SEV Biblia, Chapter 118:12

Me cercaron como abejas, fueron apagados como fuegos de espinos; en el nombre del SEOR, que yo los talar.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Psalms 117:12

Verse 12. They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of
thorns ] I shall refer to Dr. Delaney's note on this passage. The reader has here in miniature two of the finest images in Homer; which, if his curiosity demands to be gratified, he will find illustrated and enlarged, Iliad ii., ver. 86.- epesseuonto de laoi.

hute eqnea eisi melissawn adinawn, petrhv ek glafurhv aiei neon ercomenawn, botrudon de petontai ep anqesin eiarinoisin, ai men t enqa aliv pepothatai, ai de te anqa wv twn eqnea polla newn apo kai klisiawn hionov proparoiqe baqeihv esticownto iladon eiv agorhn.- The following host, Poured forth by thousands, darkens all the coast.

As from some rocky cleft the shepherd sees, Clustering in heaps on heaps, the driving bees, Rolling and blackening, swarms succeeding swarms, With deeper murmurs and more hoarse alarms: Dusky they spread a close embodied crowd, And o'er the vale descends the living cloud; So from the tents and ships a lengthening train Spreads all the beach, and wide o'ershades the plain; Along the region runs a deafening sound; Beneath their footsteps groans the trembling ground. POPE.

The other image, the fire consuming the thorns, we find in the same book, ver. 4l5: ] hute pur aidhlon epiflegei aspeton ulhn, oureov en korufhv ekaqen de te fainetai augh wv twn ercomenwn, apo calkou qespesioio aiglh pamfanowsa di aiqerov ouranon iken.

As on some mountain, through the lofty grove, The crackling flames ascend and blaze above; The fires expanding, as the winds arise, Shoot their long beams, and kindle half the skies; So, from the polished arms, and brazen shields, A gleamy splendour flashed along the fields. POPE.

The arms resembling a gleaming fire is common both to the psalmist and Homer; but the idea of that fire being quenched when the army was conquered, is peculiar to the psalmist.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 1-18 - The account the psalmist here gives of his troubles is very applicabl to Christ: many hated him without a cause; nay, the Lord himsel chastened him sorely, bruised him, and put him to grief, that by his stripes we might be healed. God is sometimes the strength of his people, when he is not their song; they have spiritual supports, thoug they want spiritual delights. Whether the believer traces back his comfort to the everlasting goodness and mercy of God, or whether he looks forward to the blessing secured to him, he will find abundan cause for joy and praise. Every answer to our prayers is an evidenc that the Lord is on our side; and then we need not fear what man can d unto us; we should conscientiously do our duty to all, and trust in him alone to accept and bless us. Let us seek to live to declare the work of God, and to encourage others to serve him and trust in him. Suc were the triumphs of the Son of David, in the assurance that the goo pleasure of the Lord should prosper in his hand.
