King James Bible - Genesis 31:35

And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.

World English Bible

She said to her father, "Don't let my lord be angry that I can't rise up before you; for I'm having my period." He searched, but didn't find the teraphim.

Douay-Rheims - Genesis 31:35

She said: Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise up before thee, because it has now happened to me, according to the custom of women, So his careful search was in vain.

Webster's Bible Translation

And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.

SEV Biblia, Chapter 31:35

Y ella dijo a su padre: No se enoje mi señor, porque no me puedo levantar delante de ti; porque tengo la costumbre de las mujeres. Y él buscó, pero no halló los ídolos.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Genesis 31:35

Verse 35. The
custom of women is upon me.] This she knew must be a satisfactory reason to her father; for if the teraphim were used to any religious purpose, and they seem to have been used in this way, as Laban calls them his gods, he therefore could not suspect that a woman in such a situation, whose touch was considered as defiling, would have sat upon articles that were either the objects of his adoration, or used for any sacred purpose. The stratagem succeeded to her wish, and Laban departed without suspicion. It seems very natural to suppose that Rachel did believe that by the use of these teraphim Laban could find out their flight, and the direction they took, and therefore she stole them; and having stolen them she was afraid to acknowledge the theft, and probably might think that they might be of some use to herself. Therefore, for these reasons, she brought them away.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 22-35 -
God can put a bridle in the mouth of wicked men, to restrain their malice, though he do not change their hearts. Though they have no love to God's people, they will pretend to it, and try to make a merit of necessity. Foolish Laban! to call those things his gods which could be stolen! Enemies may steal our goods, but not our God. Here Laban lay to Jacob's charge things that he knew not. Those who commit their caus to God, are not forbidden to plead it themselves with meekness an fear. When we read of Rachel's stealing her father's images, what scene of iniquity opens! The family of Nahor, who left the idolatrou Chaldees; is this family itself become idolatrous? It is even so. The truth seems to be, that they were like some in after-times, who swar by the Lord and by Malcham, Zep 1:5; and like others in our times, wh wish to serve both God and mammon. Great numbers will acknowledge the true God in words, but their hearts and houses are the abodes of spiritual idolatry. When a man gives himself up to covetousness, lik Laban, the world is his god; and he has only to reside among gros idolaters in order to become one, or at least a favourer of their abominations.
