King James Bible - Isaiah 32:13

Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:

World English Bible

Thorns and briars will come up on my people's land; yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city.

Douay-Rheims - Isaiah 32:13

Upon the land of my people shall thorns and briers come up: how much more upon all the houses of joy, of the city that rejoiced?

Webster's Bible Translation

Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; also, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:

Isa 6:11; 7:23; 34:13 Ps 107:34 Ho 9:6; 10:8

SEV Biblia, Chapter 32:13

Sobre la tierra de mi pueblo subirán espinas y cardos; y aun sobre todas las casas de placer en la ciudad de alegría.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Isaiah 32:13

Verse 13. Shall come up
thorns and briers "The thorn and the brier shall come up"] All the ancient Versions read rymw veshamir, with the conjunction. And an ancient MS. has wb hl[t taaleh bo, "shall come up in it, "which seems to be right; or rather hb bah: and there is a rasure in the place of wb bo in another ancient MS.

Yea, upon all the houses of joy] For yk ki, the ancient Versions, except the Vulgate, seem to have read w ve. yk ki may perhaps be a mistake for wb bo, or hb bah, in it, above mentioned. It is not necessary in this place.

The description of impending distress which begins at ver. 13 belongs to other times than that of Sennacherib's invasion, from which they were so soon delivered. It must at least extend to the ruin of the country and city by the Chaldeans. And the promise of blessings which follows was not fulfilled under the Mosaic dispensation; they belong to the KINGDOM of Messiah. Compare ver. 15 with chap. xxix. 17, and see the note there.

Matthew Henry Commentary
Times of
peace and happiness. (Is. 32:1-8) An interval of trouble, ye comfort and blessings in the end. (Is. 32:9-20)

Is. 32:1-8 Christ our righteous King, and his true disciples, ar evidently here intended. The consolations and graces of his Spirit ar as rivers of water in this dry land; and as the overhanging roc affords refreshing shade and shelter to the weary traveller in the desert, so his power, truth, and love, yield the believer the only rea protection and refreshment in the weary land through which he journey to heaven. Christ bore the storm himself, to keep it off from us. To him let the trembling sinner flee for refuge; for he alone can protec and refresh us in every trial. See what pains sinners take in sin; the labour at it, their hearts are intent upon it, and with art they wor iniquity; but this is our comfort, that they can do no more mischie than God permits. Let us seek to have our hearts more freed from selfishness. The liberal soul devises liberal things concerning God and desires that He will grant wisdom and prudence, the comforts of his presence, the influence of his Spirit, and in due time the enjoyment of his glory.

Is. 32:9-20 When there was so much provocation given to the holy God bad times might be expected. Alas! how many careless ones there are who support self-indulgence by shameful niggardliness! We deserve to be deprived of the supports of life, when we make them the food of lusts Let such tremble and be troubled. Blessed times shall be brought in by the pouring out of the Spirit from on high; then, and not till then there will be good times. The present state of the Jews shall continu until a more abundant pouring out of the Spirit from on high. Peace an quietness shall be found in the way and work of righteousness. Tru satisfaction is to be had only in true religion. And real holiness is real happiness now, and shall be perfect happiness, that is, perfec holiness for ever. The good seed of the word shall be sown in all places, and be watered by Divine grace; and laborious, patien labourers shall be sent forth into God's husbandry __________________________________________________________________
