11. Earthquakes. See on Matt. xiii. 8.Famines and pestilences (limoi kai loimoi). Some texts reverse the order of the words. A paronomasia or combination of like-sounding words: limoi, loimoi. Especially common in Paul's epistles.
Fearful sights (fobhtra). Only here in New Testament, and rare in classical Greek. In Septuagint, Isa. xix. 17. Not confined to sights, but fearful things. Rev., better, terrors. Used in medical language by Hippocrates, of fearful objects imagined by the sick.

21:11 {Famines and pestilences} (loimoi kai limoi). Play on the two words pronounced just alike in the _Koin_ (itacism). {And terrors} (fobeqra te). The use of te ... te in this verse groups the two kinds of woes. this rare word fobeqra is only here in the N.T. It is from fobew, to frighten, and occurs only in the plural as here.
