Ver. 34. I have seen, I have see the
affliction of my people , &c] The repetition of the phrase denotes the certainty of it, the exquisite and exact knowledge the Lord took of the affliction of his people, and how much his heart was affected with it: which is in Egypt ; from whence Moses had fled and had left them, he being now in the land of Midian, which was the place of his sojourning: and I have heard their groaning ; under their various oppressions and burdens, and by reason of the cruel usage of their taskmasters: and am come down to deliver them ; not by local motion, or change of place, God being omnipresent, who fills all places at all times; but by the effects of his grace and power. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt ; to Pharaoh, the king of it, ( Exodus 3:10) to require of him to let the children of Israel go, and to deliver them out of their bondage.

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 30-41 - Men
deceive themselves, if they think God cannot do what he sees to be good any where; he can bring his people into a wilderness, and ther speak comfortably to them. He appeared to Moses in a flame of fire, ye the bush was not consumed; which represented the state of Israel i Egypt, where, though they were in the fire of affliction, yet they wer not consumed. It may also be looked upon as a type of Christ's takin upon him the nature of man, and the union between the Divine and huma nature. The death of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, cannot break the covenant relation between God and them. Our Saviour by this proves the future state, Mt 22:31. Abraham is dead, yet God is still his God therefore Abraham is still alive. Now, this is that life an immortality which are brought to light by the gospel. Stephen her shows that Moses was an eminent type of Christ, as he was Israel' deliverer. God has compassion for the troubles of his church, and the groans of his persecuted people; and their deliverance takes rise from his pity. And that deliverance was typical of what Christ did, when for us men, and for our salvation, he came down from heaven. Thi Jesus, whom they now refused, as their fathers did Moses, even thi same has God advanced to be a Prince and Saviour. It does not at all take from the just honour of Moses to say, that he was but a instrument, and that he is infinitely outshone by Jesus. In assertin that Jesus should change the customs of the ceremonial law. Stephen wa so far from blaspheming Moses, that really he honoured him, by showin how the prophecy of Moses was come to pass, which was so clear. God wh gave them those customs by his servant Moses, might, no doubt, chang the custom by his Son Jesus. But Israel thrust Moses from them, an would have returned to their bondage; so men in general will not obe Jesus, because they love this present evil world, and rejoice in their own works and devices.

34. I have seen, I have seen (idwn eidon). Lit., having seen I saw. A Hebraism. See
Exod. iii. 7 (Sept.). Compare Judg. i. 28: utterly drive them out; lit., removing did not utterly remove. Judg. iv. 9: going I will go; i.e., I will surely go. Gen. xxxvii. 8: reigning shalt thou reign; i.e., shalt thou indeed reign. So Rev. here, "I have surely seen."

affliction} (tn kak"sin). From kakow, to treat evilly (from kakos, evil). Old word, here only in the N.T. and from #Ex 3:7. {Groaning} (stenagmou). Old word from stenazw, to sigh, to groan. In the N.T. only here and #Ro 8:26. Root sten in our word stentorian. {I am come down} (kateben). Second aorist active indicative of katabainw, I came down. {To deliver} (exelesqai). Second aorist middle infinitive of exairew, to take out for myself. {I will send} (aposteilw). First aorist active subjunctive (hortatory of apostellw, "Let me send").
