Verse 5. Gave him none inheritance] Both Abraham and Jacob had small parcels of land in Canaan; but they had them by purchase, not by God's gift; for, as Abraham was obliged to buy a burying-place in Canaan, Gen. xxiii. 3-18, it is obvious he had no inheritance there. Ver. 5. And he gave him none inheritance in it , etc.] To be personally enjoyed by him; and which was a great trial to Abrahams faith, to be brought out of his country, and into another land, and which was promised to him and his; and yet, as not the whole, so not a single part of it was given him to possess: no, not so much as to set his foot on : so that when Sarah his wife died, he was obliged to buy a piece of ground for a burying place to bury her in: and which could not be said to be given him by the Lord, for he bought it with his money: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child ; which was another exercise of Abrahams faith, that he should have a whole country promised him and his seed, and yet had no seed given him; (see Genesis 12:7 13:15 15:2,3,7).

Verses 1-16 - Stephen was charged as a blasphemer of God, and an apostate from the church; therefore he shows that he is a son of Abraham, and value himself on it. The slow steps by which the promise made to Abraha advanced toward performance, plainly show that it had a spiritual meaning, and that the land intended was the heavenly. God owned Josep in his troubles, and was with him by the power of his Spirit, both of his own mind by giving him comfort, and on those he was concerned with by giving him favour in their eyes. Stephen reminds the Jews of their mean beginning as a check to priding themselves in the glories of tha nation. Likewise of the wickedness of the patriarchs of their tribes in envying their brother Joseph; and the same spirit was still workin in them toward Christ and his ministers. The faith of the patriarchs in desiring to be buried in the land of Canaan, plainly showed they ha regard to the heavenly country. It is well to recur to the first ris of usages, or sentiments, which have been perverted. Would we know the nature and effects of justifying faith, we should study the characte of the father of the faithful. His calling shows the power and freenes of Divine grace, and the nature of conversion. Here also we see tha outward forms and distinctions are as nothing, compared with separatio from the world, and devotedness to God.

5. Inheritance (klhronomian). See on 1 Pet. i. 4.Not so much as to set his foot on (oude bhma podov). Lit., not even the stepping of a foot. From the original meaning, a pace or step, which occurs only here in the New Testament, comes the sense of a step considered as a raised place or seat, and hence a tribune or judgment-seat, which is its meaning in every other passage of the New Testament.
Possession (katascesin). Only here and ver. 45. See on keep, Luke viii. 15. It denotes a permanent possession.

7:5 {Not so much as to set his foot on} (oude bema podos). From #De 2:5. Old word from bainw, to go, to step. "Stepping of a foot," only instance of this original meaning in the N.T. From this it comes to mean a platform reached by steps, official seat of a judge (#Mt 27:19). The field purchased by Abraham (#Ge 23:9-17) was not a gift from God. {Promised} (epeggeilato). First aorist middle indicative of epaggellw, common verb. See #Ge 12:7; 17:8; 48:4 for this promise. So God appeared again to Abraham in a strange land. {In possession} (eis katascesin). Late word, in LXX, and in N.T. only here and verse #45. From katecw, to hold back, qen to hold fast (or down), to possess. It was fulfilled in the descendants of Abraham. {When as yet he had no child} (ouk ontos autwi teknou). Genitive absolute with negative ouk rather than me to emphasize actual absence of a child. He had only the promise of God about the land and the child.
