SEV Biblia, Chapter 5:16
Honra a tu padre y a tu madre, como el SEŅOR tu Dios te ha mandado, para que sean prolongados tus días, y para que te vaya bien sobre la tierra que el SEŅOR tu Dios te da.
John Gill's Bible Commentary
Ver. 16. Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee , etc.] And is the first commandment with promise, as the apostle observes, ( Ephesians 6:2,3) with a promise of long life and happiness in the land of Canaan, as follows: that thy days may be prolonged ; (see Exodus 20:12) here it is added, and that it may go well with thee ; and which the apostle also has in the place referred to: in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee ; the land of Canaan; which the same apostle explains to a greater latitude, that thou mayest live long on the earth ; applying it to Christians under the Gospel dispensation, whether Jews or Gentiles.
Matthew Henry Commentary
Verses 6-22 - There is some variation here from Ex 20 as between the Lord's prayer i Mt 6 and Lu 11. It is more necessary that we tie ourselves to the things, than to the words unalterably. The original reason for hallowing the sabbath, taken from God's resting from the work of creation on the seventh day, is not here mentioned. Though this eve remains in force, it is not the only reason. Here it is taken from Israel's deliverance out of Egypt; for that was typical of ou redemption by Jesus Christ, in remembrance of which the Christia sabbath was to be observed. In the resurrection of Christ we wer brought into the glorious liberty of the children of God, with a might hand, and an outstretched arm. How sweet is it to a soul trul distressed under the terrors of a broken law, to hear the mild an soul-reviving language of the gospel!
