Ver. 2. And they watched him , etc..] The
ruler of the synagogue, and the principal men in it; particularly the Scribes and Pharisees, who followed him wherever he went; they observed him diligently, and kept their eyes upon him; this lame man being in the synagogue, to see whether he would heal him on the sabbath day ; which, knowing his readiness to do good, they might expect he would: that they might accuse him ; as they had accused his disciples before, of the violation of the sabbath: according to the Evangelist Matthew, they put a question to him, whether it was lawful to heal on the sabbath day? with this view, that they might, one way or another, have something to accuse him of, either to the people, or to the sanhedrim; (see Gill on Matthew 12:10).

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 1-5 - This man's case was piteous; he had a withered hand, which disabled his from working for his living; and those that are so, are the most prope objects of
charity. Let those be helped that cannot help themselves But stubborn infidels, when they can say nothing against the truth, ye will not yield. We hear what is said amiss, and see what is done amiss but Christ looks at the root of bitterness in the heart, the blindnes and hardness of that, and is grieved. Let hard-hearted sinners trembl to think of the anger with which he will look upon them shortly, when the day of his wrath comes. The great healing day now is the sabbath and the healing place the house of prayer; but the healing power is of Christ. The gospel command is like that recorded here: though our hand are withered, yet, if we will not stretch them out, it is our own faul that we are not healed. But if we are healed, Christ, his power an grace, must have all the glory.

Vincent's NT Word Studies

2. They watched (parethroun). Imperfect tense. They kept watching. The compound verb, with para, by the side of, means to watch carefully or closely, as one who dogs another's steps, keeping beside or near him. Wyc., They aspieden him: i.e., played the
spy. On threw, to watch, see on John xvii. 12.

He would heal (qerapeusei). Future tense: whether he will heal, the reader being placed at the time of the watching, and looking forward to the future.


Robertson's NT Word Studies

3:2 {They watched} (pareteroun). Imperfect tense, were watching on the side (or sly). Luke uses the middle voice, pareterounto, to accent their personal interest in the proceedings. It was the sabbath day and in the synagogue and they were there ready to catch him in the act if he should dare to violate their rules as he had done in the wheat fields on the previous sabbath. Probably the same Pharisees are present now as qen. {That they might accuse him} (hina katgors"sin autou). So #Mt 12:10. Luke has it "that they might find how to accuse him" (hina heurwsin kategorein autou). They were determined to accuse him. The sabbath controversy offered the best opening. So here they are ready for business.
