King James Bible - Mark 12:14

And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

World English Bible

When they had come, they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don't defer to anyone; for you aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?

Douay-Rheims - Mark 12:14

Who coming, say to him: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker, and carest not for any man; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar; or shall we not give it?

Webster's Bible Translation

And when they had come, they say to him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not?

SEV Biblia, Chapter 12:14

¿Daremos, o no daremos?

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 14. And when they were come , etc..] Unto
Jesus in the temple: they said unto him, master ; they saluted him in like manner, as they did their doctors and Rabbins, calling him Rabbi, though they were not his disciples; but one part of them were the disciples of the Pharisees, and the other had Herod for their master; we know that thou art true ; an honest, sincere, and upright man, and carest for no man, for thou regardest not the person of men ; no, not Caesar himself; but teachest the way of God in truth ; instructest men in the word, will, and worship of God, with all integrity and faithfulness; answer therefore this question, is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not ? The Syriac and Persic versions read, head money; and so it is read in Beza's most ancient copy; a tax that was levied on the heads of families; or on every particular head in a family; (see Gill on Matthew 22:16-17).

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 13-17 - The
enemies of Christ would be thought desirous to know their duty when really they hoped that which soever side he took of the question they might find occasion to accuse him. Nothing is more likely to insnare the followers of Christ, than bringing them to meddle with disputes about worldly politics. Jesus avoided the snare, by referrin to the submission they had already made as a nation; and all that hear him, marvelled at the great wisdom of his answer. Many will praise the words of a sermon, who will not be commanded by the doctrines of it.

14. Tribute. See on
Matt. xxii. 19.

Person (proswpon). Lit., face.

Shall we give, etc. A touch peculiar to Mark.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

12:14 {Shall we give or shall we not give?} (dwmen e me dwmen;). Mark alone repeats the question in this sharp form. The deliberative subjunctive, aorist tense active voice. For the discussion of the palaver and flattery of this group of theological students see on Mt 22:16-22.
