Verse 43. If he will have him] Or, if he delight in him-ei qelei auton. The verbs qelw and eqelw, are used by the Septuagint in more than forty places for the Hebrew pj chaphets, which signifies, earnestly to desire, or delight in. Now as this is a quotation from Psa. xxii. 8, He trusted in the Lord, that he would deliver him; let him deliver him, ( wb pj yk ki chaphets bo,) for he HATH DELIGHTED IN HIM:-oti qelei auton, Sept.
This will sufficiently vindicate the above translation; as the evangelist quotes the words from that version, with the simple change of ei, if, for oti, because.

Ver. 43. He trusted in God , etc.] That is, he pretended to claim an interest in him, to be high in his favour and esteem, and to have great faith and confidence in him: let him deliver him now ; directly, from the cross, and the death of it: if he will have him ; or if he is well pleased with him as his own Son, or delights in him as such, and will show him any favour and good will; (see Psalm 22:8), where are these very words, and which are predicted should be said by these men to Christ; and are a wonderful confirmation of the truth of that Psalm and prophecy belonging to him: for he said, I am the Son of God ; not only in his ministry, but he had said so in their grand council, before them all.

Verses 35-44 - It was usual to put shame upon malefactors, by a writing to notify the crime for which they suffered. So they set up one over Christ's head This they designed for his reproach, but God so overruled it, that eve his accusation was to his honour. There were crucified with him at the same time, two robbers. He was, at his death, numbered among the transgressors, that we, at our death, might be numbered among the saints. The taunts and jeers he received are here recorded. The enemie of Christ labour to make others believe that of religion and of the people of God, which they themselves know to be false. The chie priests and scribes, and the elders, upbraid Jesus with being the Kin of Israel. Many people could like the King of Israel well enough, if he would but come down from the cross; if they could but have his kingdo without the tribulation through which they must enter into it. But if no cross, then no Christ, no crown. Those that would reign with him must be willing to suffer with him. Thus our Lord Jesus, havin undertaken to satisfy the justice of God, did it, by submitting to the punishment of the worst of men. And in every minute particular recorde about the sufferings of Christ, we find some prediction in the Prophet or the Psalms fulfilled.

43. If he will have him (ei qelei auton). Rev., correctly, If he desireth him: i.e., If he likes him. Compare Ps. xviii. (Sept. 17) 19; because he delighted in me (hqelhse me), Ps. xli. (Sept. 40) 11 (teqelhkav me).
Robertson's NT Word Studies
27:43 {Let him deliver him now} (rhusasth" nun). They add the word "now" to #Ps 21; 22:8. That is the point of the sneer at Christ's claim to be God's son thrown in his teeth again and at the willingness and power of God to help his "son." The verb qelw here may mean {love} as in the Septuagint (#Ps 18:20; 41:12) or "cares for" (Moffatt), "gin he cares ocht for him" (_Braid Scots_).
