And the Lord said unto David my father , etc.] By Nathan the prophet: whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou didst well that it was in thine heart ; his design was good, and so far it was acceptable to the Lord, that he thought of such a thing, though it was not his pleasure that should do it, as follows.
Matthew Henry Commentary Verses 12-21 - Solomon encouraged the priests, who were much astonished at the dar cloud. The dark dispensations of Providence should quicken us in fleeing for refuge to the hope of the gospel. Nothing can mor reconcile us to them, than to consider what God has said, and to compare his word and works together. Whatever good we do, we must loo on it as the performance of God's promise to us, not of our promises to him.
