Verse 51. Was subject unto them] Behaved towards them with all dutiful submission. Probably his working with his hands at his reputed father's business, is here also implied: see on ver. 41. No child among the Jews was ever brought up in idleness. Is not this the carpenter? was a saying of those Jews who appear to have had a proper knowledge of his employment while in Joseph's house. See the note on Matt. xiii. 55.

Ver. 51. And he went down with them , etc.] From the temple, and from Jerusalem, which were on high ground: and came to Nazareth ; where he, and his parents, had lived ever since their return from Egypt: and was subject unto them ; for though he thought fit to let them know, or, at least, put them in mind, that he had a Father in heaven, whose business he came about, and must do, and therefore did not judge it necessary to ask their leave to stay at Jerusalem on that account; yet, as man, and willing to set an example of filial subjection to parents, he went along with them, and showed all dutiful respect unto them, yielding a ready and cheerful obedience to their commands, living with them, and working under them, and for them: and so he continued till he was about thirty years of age: but his mother kept all these sayings , or things; for this relates not only to the words of Christ, but to the whole history of his staying behind them at Jerusalem, of his sitting among the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions, to the astonishment of all. These things she treasured up, and preserved, in her heart ; that is, in her memory; so the word is used in Jewish writings. It is reported of R. Meir f150 , that he went to intercalate the year in Asia, and there was no Megilla (the book of Esther) there, and he wrote it, wblm , out of his heart, (i.e. out of his memory,) and read it.

Verses 41-52 - It is for the honour of Christ that children should attend on publi worship. His parents did not return till they had stayed all the seve days of the feast. It is well to stay to the end of an ordinance, a becomes those who say, It is good to be here. Those that have los their comforts in Christ, and the evidences of their having a part in him, must bethink themselves where, and when, and how they lost them and must turn back again. Those that would recover their los acquaintance with Christ, must go to the place in which he has put his name; there they may hope to meet him. They found him in some part of the temple, where the doctors of the law kept their schools; he wa sitting there, hearkening to their instructions, proposing questions and answering inquiries, with such wisdom, that those who heard wer delighted with him. Young persons should seek the knowledge of Divin truth, attend the ministry of the gospel, and ask such questions of their elders and teachers as may tend to increase their knowledge Those who seek Christ in sorrow, shall find him with the greater joy Know ye not that I ought to be in my Father's house; at my Father' work; I must be about my Father's business. Herein is an example; for it becomes the children of God, in conformity to Christ, to atten their heavenly Father's business, and make all other concerns give wa to it. Though he was the Son of God, yet he was subject to his earthl parents; how then will the foolish and weak sons of men answer it, wh are disobedient to their parents? However we may neglect men's sayings because they are obscure, yet we must not think so of God's sayings That which at first is dark, may afterwards become plain and easy. The greatest and wisest, those most eminent, may learn of this admirabl and Divine Child, that it is the truest greatness of soul to know ou own place and office; to deny ourselves amusements and pleasures no consistent with our state and calling __________________________________________________________________

51. Was subject (hn upotassomenov). The participle and finite verb, denoting habitual, continuous subjection. "Even before, he had been subject to them; but this is mentioned now, when it might seem that he could by this time have exempted himself. Not even to the angels fell such an honor as to the parents of Jesus" (Bengel). Compare Hebrew i. 4-8. Kept (diethrei). Only here and Acts xv. 29. The preposition dia, through, indicated close, faithful, persistent keeping, through all the circumstances which might have weakened the impression of the events. Compare Gen. xxxvii. 11.

2:51 {He was subject unto them} (en hupotassomenos autois). Periphrastic imperfect passive. He continued subject unto them, this wondrous boy who really knew more than parents and rabbis, this gentle, obedient, affectionate boy. The next eighteen years at Nazareth (#Lu 3:23) he remained growing into manhood and becoming the carpenter of Nazareth (#Mr 6:3) in succession to Joseph (#Mt 13:55) who is mentioned here for the last time. Who can tell the wishful days when Jesus waited at Nazareth for the Father to call him to his Messianic task? {Kept} (dieterei). Imperfect active. Ancient Greek word (diaterew), but only here and #Ac 15:29 in the N.T. though in #Ge 37:11. She kept thoroughly (dia) all these recent sayings (or things, rhmata). In #2:19 suneterei is the word used of Mary after the shepherds left. These she kept pondering and comparing all the things. Surely she has a full heart now. Could she foresee how destiny would take Jesus out beyond her mother's reach?
