And when the people were assembled in crowds, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of Jonah the prophet.

VERSE (29) -
Lu 12:1; 14:25,26

SEV Biblia, Chapter 11:29

¶ Y juntndose la multitud a l, comenz a decir: Esta generacin es mala; seal busca, mas seal no le ser dada, sino la seal de Jons profeta.

Clarke's Bible Commentary - Luke 11:29

Verse 29. This is an
evil generation] Or, This is a wicked race of men. See on Matt. xii. 38-42.

John Gill's Bible Commentary

Ver. 29. And when the people were gathered thick together , etc.] Upon this
woman's lifting up her voice, and saying the things she did; or rather to see what sign he would give, which some had desired ( Luke 11:16) he began to say, this is an evil generation . The Alexandrian copy, two copies of Beza's, and the Vulgate Latin, and Arabic versions read, this generation is an evil generation; and also it was an adulterous one, as is added in ( Matthew 12:39) they seek a sign ; for they had asked one of him, ( Luke 11:16) and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet ; one like unto it: (see Gill on Matthew 12:39) Ver. 30. For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninevites , etc.] As he was by lying three days and three nights in the whale's belly, and then cast on shore alive; which sign, or miracle was wrought to confirm his mission and message, and to engage the Ninevites to give credit to him, and repent, or they might assure themselves they would be utterly destroyed; so shall also the son of man be to this generation ; by lying three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, and then rising again from the dead the third day; and which should be done to confirm the truth of his Messiahship, and to declare him to be the Son of God with power, and to engage persons to believe in him; and to assure that wicked generation, that in case they remained, after such a sign, impenitent and unbelieving, wrath would come upon them to the uttermost; (see Matthew 12:40).

Matthew Henry Commentary

Verses 29-36 -
Christ promised that there should be one sign more given, even the sig of Jonah the prophet; which in Matthew is explained, as meaning the resurrection of Christ; and he warned them to improve this sign. But though Christ himself were the constant preacher in any congregation and worked miracles daily among them, yet unless his grace humble their hearts, they would not profit by his word. Let us not desire mor evidence and fuller teaching than the Lord is pleased to afford us. We should pray without ceasing that our hearts and understandings may be opened, that we may profit by the light we enjoy. And especially tak heed that the light which is in us be not darkness; for if our leadin principles be wrong, our judgment and practice must become more so.

Vincent's NT Word Studies

29. Were gathered thick together (epaqroizomenwn). The present participle; and therefore, as Rev., were gathering together unto him, or upon him (epi). Only here in New Testament.

Evil. See on adulterous. Matt. xii. 39.

Robertson's NT Word Studies

11:29 {Were gathering together unto him} (epaqroizomenwn). Genitive absolute present middle participle of epaqroizw, a rare verb, Plutarch and here only in the N.T., from epi and aqroizw (a common enough verb). It means to throng together (aqroos, in throngs). Vivid picture of the crowds around Jesus. {But the sign of Jonah} (ei me to semeion iwna). Luke does not give here the burial and resurrection of Jesus of which Jonah's experience in the big fish was a type (#Mt 12:39ff.), but that is really implied (Plummer argues) by the use here of "shall be given" (doqesetai) and "shall be" (estai), for the resurrection of Jesus is still future. The preaching of Jesus ought to have been sign enough as in the case of Jonah, but the resurrection will be given. Luke's report is much briefer and omits what is in #Mt 12:41.
