John Gill's Bible Commentary Ver. 53. The father shall be divided against the etc.] Shall oppose him, differ with him, and be alienated from him, and so the other relations as follow; (see Gill on � Matthew 10:35-36�).
Matthew Henry Commentary Verses 41-53 - All are to take to themselves what Christ says in his word, and to inquire concerning it. No one is left so ignorant as not to know man things to be wrong which he does, and many things to be right which he neglects; therefore all are without excuse in their sin. The bringin in the gospel dispensation would occasion desolations. Not that thi would be the tendency of Christ's religion, which is pure, peaceable and loving; but the effect of its being contrary to men's pride an lusts. There was to be a wide publication of the gospel. But befor that took place, Christ had a baptism to be baptized with, fa different from that of water and the Holy Spirit. He must endur sufferings and death. It agreed not with his plan to preach the gospe more widely, till this baptism was completed. We should be zealous i making known the truth, for though divisions will be stirred up, and man's own household may be his foes, yet sinners will be converted, an God will be glorified.

Vincent's NT Word Studies 53. The father shall be divided, etc. But the verb is in the plural.Rightly, as Rev., "They shall be divided, the father against the son," etc. Daughter-in-law. See on Matt. x. 35.
